From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Bernhard Burgener (born 7 August 1957) is a Swiss media entrepreneur and former president of the football club FC Basel.

Life[edit]

Burgener was born in Basel, where he grew up with his two sisters.[1] He went to school in the Christoph Merian school house. He then went to the Mathematical Natural Science Gymnasium and the Bäumlihof Gymnasium. At the age of 16, he decided to complete a commercial apprenticeship as basic training.[2] He is married, has two children and lives in Zeiningen in Aargau.[3]

Media entrepreneur[edit]

At the age of 25, he founded Sunset Video AG and opened video stores in the greater Basel area. A year later he sold it. In 1983, together with a partner, he founded Rainbow Video AG for the distribution of videos. Two years later the company expanded into neighboring Austria.[4] In 1987, he sold the company to the Ringier media group while remaining managing director, and bought the shares back from Ringier in 1991.[5]

In 1994, with the help of a partner, he acquired a stake in Highlight Communications and at the same time became delegate of the board of directors.[5] Five years later, he took over the chairmanship of the board of directors and floated the company on the stock exchange in May of the same year.[5] Its subsidiary Team Marketing markets the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup.[6] It has been partnering with UEFA for over 25 years.[7]

In 2003, he took over Constantin Film.[5] He was Chairman of the Management Board from 2009 to 2013 and Chairman of the Supervisory Board since 2014.[8] Burgener acted as CEO from 2009 for three years.[9]

In addition, Burgener’s Highlights Communication together with Studhalter Investment AG took over Constantin Medien.[10] From 2008 to 2015, Burgener acted as CEO of Constantin Medien.[8]

FC Basel[edit]

From July 1, 2017 to May 2021, Burgener was also Chairman of the Board of Directors and the Association Board of FC Basel.[11] His goal was to play in the long term with 6 to 8 Basel players in the team, including 4 to 6 from the youth center.[12] Burgener is very controversial among the fans, as shown by numerous actions calling for his resignation as president of FC Basel.[13] On September 29th, 2020, Bernhard Burgener announced in an interview on the club's website that he would no longer stand for election as club president at the next general assembly, which he considered a "logical step".[14] He remained the majority shareholder of FC Basel Holding AG and thus club owner.[15] In May 2021, Burgener sold his shares to the former national player David Degen.[16] Burgener pointed out that his decision to leave was not related to the criticism against him but to the wellbeing of the club.[16]
