Beware Fashionable Women is an American indie pop/rock band based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 2008 the band began independently releasing material that would eventually become their first album. The recordings were made in Boston, Massachusetts, Los Angeles, California, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania over the course of a two-year period. The band draws influence from The Eels, Violent Femmes, and Weezer, as well as the genres alternative rock and pop rock. The eponymous album was praised for its use of catchy melodies and harmonies [1][2] and was named in Music Connection Magazine's Top 25 Unsigned Bands of 2009, receiving the number three slot.[3]

The band was founded by vocalist/guitarist Barak Shpiez. Shpiez wrote the songs and recorded most of the instruments on the album with assistance from drummer Lou Paniccia of Boston's Oranjuly. Songs from the album were included in AudioSurf before the album was released. The game, in which users control a racer to avoid obstacles created by the beat of the music, featured "I'll Be the DJ" and the track "He's A Boy", which was ultimately not included on the album.

In December 2009, Shpiez helped Rivers Cuomo of Weezer produce two songs for Cuomo's upcoming solo album. Cuomo, who had been injured in a bus accident,[4] created a page on Indaba Music to solicit demos, eventually selecting Shpiez's versions.[5]
