Bhagawan Bhandari (Nepali: भगवान भण्डारी) is a Nepali folk singer, songwriter and music composer.[1][2] His notable works include Phulma Bhamara(2006), Khaireni Ma Get(2001), Ban Ma Kanda Cha, Mauri Phool Mathi and Gayau Dhoka Diyera, among others. He has collaborated with other prominent Nepali folk singers like Bima Kumari Dura, Laxmi Neupane, Raju Pariyar and Bishnu Majhi, as well as his wife Nirmala Bhandari. He is retired from Nepali music, and has been living in the United States for about ten years, as of 2019.

Early life[edit]

He was born on 12 June 1976, in Chapakot Municipality, Damachaur, Syangja.[citation needed]

Career[edit]

Bhandari debuted with Kothi Galaima(1999).[2] His first major success came with Khaireni Ma Get(2001).[2] It featured supporting vocals from Bima Kumari Dura, Sila Ale and Laxmi Neupane, and was produced and distributed by Dhaulagiri Cassette Center. The eponymous record also included the folk song Mauri Phool Mathi.[3] He collaborated with Raju Pariyar and Laxmi Neupane on Phulma Bhamara(2006) distributed by Dhaulagiri Cassette Center.[4] It also featured vocals from Bima Kumari Dura, Nirmala Bhandari and Khem Bhandari.[5] His folk record Ban Ma Kanda Cha, also distributed by Dhaulagiri Cassette Center, and featuring a group vocal from Raju Pariyar, Laxmi Neupane and Bhandari himself,[6] was nominated for Folk record of the year at Hits FM music awards in 2005.[7]

His other works include Bigryo Chal Pani, sung by him and Bima Kumari Dura, and produced and distributed by Dhaulagiri Cassette Center,[8], Baba Aama, an homage to his parents, written, composed and sung by him and produced by Bindabasini Music.[9] His other records produced and distributed by Dhaulagiri Cassette Center are Gayau Dhoka Diyera,[10] Dilko Dhoka Band, Manaima pirko bhari cha, Ghumdai chu mauri jhai and Hasi hasi jau[10] among others. His records produced by Bindabasini Music include Aainan Farkera, Guras jhai phulera and Loktantrako kopila layo,[11] a politically charged CD album.

He has published at least 16 CDs in total. He has toured India, Malaysia, Singapore and Qatar, and performed in the United States.[2]

Personal life[edit]

He is married to Nirmal Bhandari, who is also a folk singer in Nepal, and a frequent collaborator. He has two children with her, a son and a daughter.[2] As of March 2019, he had been living in the United States for almost ten years, and was not active in Nepali music.[2][12] In an interview to a local Illinois newspaper, he claimed that he had fled Nepal to escape extortion and violence from the Maoists, that he had applied for asylum in the United States for the same reason, and his family was in hiding in Nepal.[2] However, according to Saptahik weekly, he had said that he had emigrated to the United States for better money, easier lifestyle and his family's future. According to the same report, he had worked as a waiter in Chicago for three years, and then started his own business in Baltimore.[12]
