Career
Chaturvedi holds a master's degree in history from University of Delhi and a master's degree in International Public Policy from the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University. She has also worked as a consultant with the Industrial Design Department at IIT, to set up a (nearly) zero-waste system with local communities.[8]
In December 1999, Chaturvedi founded the New Delhi-based NGO Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group. The main idea behind its establishment was to advocate for cities that are green, sustainable, and inclusive of the poor.[9]
Bharati has served on various government committees with her strong policy advocacy work.[10] Most recently, she was a part of the Expert Committee on Plastic Waste, set up by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and helped finalize the rules for plastic waste handling. She was also a part of the Task Force for social security for the informal sector, set up by the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Further, she has been involved in consultations about the Indian government's Hazardous Waste Strategy and Electronic Waste Rules. [11]
Achievements
In September 2014, Bharati was recognized by ASSOCAM and Rai University for her remarkable work in the environmental sector and received the Women Grassroots Entrepreneur of the Decade award.[12]
Chaturvedi is a LEAD (Leadership in Environment and Development) fellow and a Synergos Senior Fellow.[13] In 2009, she received the Knowledge for the World Award from the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association.
Under her guidance, the non-profit organization Chintan has also been awarded several awards, including the Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award, the U.S. Secretary of State’s Award for Innovation for the Empowerment of Women and Girls in 2012, third place at the UN-BMW Intercultural Innovation Award in 2013, and a special mention by the President of the Republic of France for its work on defending human rights in 2014.[14]
