Bibi Bhagbhari
Bibi Bhag Bhari was the first Sikh preacher appointed for the Kashmir region by Guru Amar Das. At a very young age, she became a disciple of Guru Amar Das. The third Guru of Sikhs, Amar Dass, established a system of spreading the teachings of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, by appointing local community spiritual heads, under which 94 men and 54 women were appointed as chiefs of different administrative regions. These community leaders were appointed to perform the role of bishop, to manage the place of worship under their administrative control and provide guidance to live life as per Sikh faith. The administrative units headed by men were called Manji (wooden cot) and those headed by women were called Pihrri (small wooden cot meant for women to sit and perform day-to-day tasks). [1] Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru of Sikhs, on hearing of her devotion, went to Kashmir to meet her, though Bhagbhari was quite elderly at that time. An important shrine dedicated to this visit of the Guru is still there in Srinagar, known as Gurdwara Chatti Patshahi.
