Bieniek-Face
Bieniek-Face (also Bieniekface) is a body of art by the German artist Sebastian Bieniek, which is divided into painting and photography. The art piece began in 2012 with the Secondfaced series and became suddenly famous 2013 with the Doublefaced series that has been worldwide spread first through social media and later all kind of media, including famous magazines and TV.[1]
Emergence[edit]
The first photo of the art piece was a self-portrait of the artist (2012) titled "Secondfaced No. 1" (part of the Secondfaced series), on which he painted hinself a black square on the face. This was followed by the Doublefaced series, which had spread viral throughout the world via the social media and was followed by more photo and painting series. In the meantime, 33 photo series and 15 painting series are part of the Bieniek-Face art piece.
Appearance[edit]
As the name Bieniek-Face already suggests, the art piece is characterized by the depiction of a multiple face, simila to the Janus-Face. In contrast to the Janus-face, however, the faces of a Bieniek-Face are not displayed on the same level, but on different levels. This means that for example one face is a realistically photographed or painted one, and the another a - mostly childishly naive - painted on it. This creates an increased gap in perception, because it is not just multiple faces but also multiple genres of representation. For example, childish drawing vs. realistic photography or realistic painting.
Spread & Publication[edit]
The first Bieniek-Face photos that became known worldwide were photos from the 2013 Doublefaced series of photographs. They became a worldwide known meme on the internet.

This caused another large media attention and press echo, which further increased the awareness of the artist's art piece.[6]
Another Bieniek-Face photo series appeared in the issue 17/2015[7] of the SZ Magazin on April 24, 2015, which is Germanys largest magazine with an edition of more than 1.000.000 printed magazines.
