Big Ugly Brewery is a brewery in Chesapeake, Virginia that opened in 2015 by Jim Lantry & Shawn Childers. It is Chesapeake's first microbrewery.[1][2]
History[edit]
With its roots in home brewing, a future founder of the company, Jim Lantry, was given a homebrewing Mr. Beer kit by his wife. This sparked the interest and after teaming up with Shawn Childers, the pair of them began formulating beer concepts for future brews. Later, through a neighborhood tasting club, Jim & Shawn had sampled over 4,000 different beers which would lead them to making the decision of opening their own brewery.
In February 2015, they opened the Big Ugly Brewery, making it the first microbrewery in Chesapeake, Virginia.
The brewery is themed in a "garage-centric" motif, due to the founder's shared interest and collection of vintage vehicles. The name of the brewery itself comes from Shawn's 1955 Chevy panel truck. The establishment includes two motorcycles mounted to the floor, as well as a Volkswagen Bus; both used for seating.[3]
The company also used Kickstarter to raise funds.[4]
Products[edit]
Beer[edit]
Big Ugly Brewery keeps about ten draft beers at a time with the inclusion of seasonal and sour beers. Recently, they have taken up the process of barrel-aging beer and plan to release more than ten different varieties.[5]
Soft Drink[edit]
They also have in-house brewed root beer that is made with whole vanilla beans, honey, sugar, extract, and Indian sarsparilla root.[6]
Relocation & Expansion[edit]
The company announced it will relocate approximately one mile from its current location. After the brewery asked for much support from the public, the City Council of Chesapeake voted to approve the growth with the 9 to 0 vote in favor of the conditional zoning.[7][8]
It will include a 15 barrel system, and a 2,500 square foot tasting room.[9] The design of the new building was a project led by Jeremy S. Maloney while with Work Program Architects.[10]
They have also opened a retail hub in the Hilltop section of Virginia Beach on January 31, 2018.[11]
