Bijaraniya
Bijaraniya is a surname of the Jat people found in the Indian states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi , Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.They are considered to be branch of Tomars.[1] The Bijaraniya (also spelled Bijarnia, Bijaranya,Vijaraniya or Vijayrania) is a distinguished Jat clan with a rich history spanning from ancient times to the modern era.
Ancient history
The name "Bijaraniya" is said to derive from "Vijayrania" (meaning victorious), awarded to their ancestors for bravery in war.[2]Greek historians with Alexander in 326 BCE referred to the "Varetatae" tribe, believed by some to be ancestors of the Bijaraniyas.[3]The clan is believed to be descended from sage Vishwamitra and associated with Tomar Jats and possibly the Pandavas.[2]
Medieval history
In 1078 CE, Vijay Singh Ranaiya (a prominent ancestor) founded the village of Bijarna Khera.[1]In 1178 CE, Bijaraniya rulers constructed a fort in Ladhana (Rajasthan).[1]The Bijaraniyas resisted invasions from the Delhi Sultanate during Iltutmish's reign (1211–1236 CE).[2]In 1255 CE, Jagsingh Bijarniya established a state in Palsana, Sikar district.[4]By 1515 CE, Dev Raj Bijarniya ruled areas of Rajasthan and clashed with Shekhawat and Kachwaha Rajputs.[3]
Modern history
Today, Bijaraniya Jats are found mainly in Rajasthan (Sikar, Jhunjhunu, Jaipur), Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Maharashtra, and UP.[2]There are about more than 150 villages of Bijaraniya in Delhi, Rajastahan,Haryana, Uttar Pradesh.Most of villages are in Sikar district of Rajasthan.[1]
Notable people
- Vir Singh Vijayrania[5] - Son of Nalh Raja[6] founded Vijarnia Khera[7] in 1078 and constructed a fort at Ladhana[8] in 1178.
- Jagsingh Bijarnia[9] founded his rule in Palsana[10] of Sikar in year 1255.
- Bhajal Lal Bijarnia[11] - Freedom fighter and hero of Shekhawati farmers movement,[12] from district Ajmer[13] in Rajasthan.
- Ladu Ram Bijarnia[14] (1899–?) - from village Gordhanpura Sikar[15] was a leading Freedom Fighter who took part in Shekhawati farmers movement[12] in Rajasthan.
- Narendra Bijarniya,[16] IPS officer of the 2015 batch.
