Nant Ram Negi
Nantram Negi (Nati Ram Negi) was born in 1725 in Berat Khai, Jaunsar Pargana, Dehradun. An unmatched brave, courageous, patriot and royal devotee who defeated the Mughal army. Jaunsar-Bhabhar is a tribal area located in the far-west of Dehradun. Materially backward but culturally rich, rich in simple and innocent social life, full of natural beauty and mythological traditions, this area is also famous as the land of heroes.
Rohila Sardar Ghulam Qadir Khan reached Dehradun after shedding rivers of blood in central Haridwar. He devastated Dehradun, killed a cow in Gurudwara Guru Ram Rai and set the Gurudwara on fire. From Dehradun he proceeded towards Nahan Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh. He camped at Paonta Sahib. The king of Nahan got scared after seeing that big army. At that time the king of Sirmaur was Jagat Prakash ji. Since the king was a minor, his mother looked after his administrative affairs. He announced who could save Nahan state in this difficult situation? The royal courtiers advised the Queen Mother that the brave Nantram Negi could come forward for this work.
The king of Nahan immediately sent his commander to Berat Khai. Passing through the inaccessible mountain route, he reached Berat Khai, the stronghold of commander Nantram. The commander gave the king's message to the young man. Nantram immediately got ready and headed towards Nahan. The king was pleased to see this well-built young man. To test Nantram, he called for a heavy sword in the court and placed it in the middle of the court and ordered him to lift it. Nantram moved towards the sword and picked it up and swung it in the air very easily. Seeing this power of his, the whole court echoed with the praise of Nantram. After this, the reins of a military contingent were handed over to Nantram. Taking it, Nantram reached the banks of Yamuna where the Mughal army was encamped. Muslim commanders were intoxicated with power. He had no idea that there could be any obstacle. Here Nantram started the attack as soon as he reached there. The Mughals were stunned. Before they could even regain their composure, the mountain soldiers created a massive massacre. Nantram himself moved forward bravely and entered the tent of the Mughal commander. The Mughal commander was even before they could prepare to retaliate, Nantram beheaded him. The army without a commander ran away. Many soldiers were washed away in the currents of Yamuna. Mughal soldiers fought with Negi Nati Ram till Kolar due to which Nati Ram and his horse got badly injured. In the climb of Markanade on 14th February 1746 Vikram Samvat, he attained martyrdom. After that Maharaja Sirmaur honored Nant Ram's family members with the title of Guldarb and as a reward, he got Kalsi Tehsil which is now Uttarakhand. Permanent Waziri and village Maletha in Uttarakhand and village Mohrad and Siyasu were given to Himachal Pradesh, which had no Descendants of Negi Nati Ram village were unable to survive even today in Mohrad Tehsil Shillai District Sirmaur Himachal Pradesh and Village Maletha Tehsil Chakrata District Dehradun Uttarakhand. Those who live in the sub-districts of Negi Guldar, Chakkarput and Berathiya are known by name.
