Dr. B. K. Mahapatra, a Fishery Scientist from India, has received numerous commendations and honors throughout his successful career. In December 2007, he was honored with the prestigious title of Fellow of Inland Fisheries Society of India, recognizing his significant contributions to Inland Fisheries and Allied Science. He has authored 125 research papers and articles, as well as contributed to the writing and editing of several books, seminar proceedings, manuals, and book chapters. His research primarily focuses on Fish Diversity, Aquaculture, Breeding, and Culture of Food & Ornamental Fish.

Early life and Education[edit]

Dr. B.K. Mahapatra was brought into the world on June 15, 1960, in a secluded village called Meghdambur, in the Keshiary region of the undivided Midnapore district of West Bengal, India. His father, Mr. Krishna Chandra Mahapatra, was a farmer, and his mother, Mrs. Charubala Mahapatra, was a homemaker. He received his primary education at Sukhdubi Uccha Prathamik Vidyalaya, and then went on to matriculate from Nachipur Adibasi High School with distinction, earning the prestigious 'Rajnarayan Smriti Padak' award in 1978. He completed his Higher Secondary education in the Science group at the same school in 1980. In 1984, he received his B.Sc Honours in Zoology from Jhargram Raj College under the University of Calcutta. He then went on to earn his M.Sc in Zoology, specializing in Fishery, in 1986 from Ballygunge Science College and a PhD in Zoology with a focus on Fish Biology and Aquaculture in 1986 under the University of Calcutta.

Professional Career[edit]

In 1986, Dr. B.K. Mahapatra completed his M.Sc. in Zoology with a specialization in Fisheries from Ballygunge Science College at the University of Calcutta. He then pursued his Ph.D. in Zoology, specializing in Fish Biology and Aquaculture, which he completed at the same university in 1996. During this period, he worked as a Training Assistant (Fishery) from 1988 to 1990 and later as a Training Associate (Fishery) from 1990 to 1997 at the Ramkrishna Ashram Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nimpith Ashram, Sunderban, West Bengal, under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

In 1997, Dr. Mahapatra was promoted to the position of Assistant Director of Fishery (Research) under Government of West Bengal, a role he held until 2000. He then joined the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region in Barapani, Meghalaya as a Senior Scientist (Fisheries) from 2000 to 2007. He was later promoted to Senior Scientist & Principal Scientist (Fish & Fisheries Sciences) at the ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (Deemed University), Kolkata Centre, where he served until 2011. Subsequently, he was appointed as the Principal Scientist & Scientist-in-Charge[1] at the same institution till 2017 and he continued to serve as the Senior most Principal Scientist until his retirement in 2022 from ICAR, Kolkata.[2]

Although Dr. Mahapatra has retired from ICAR, he continues to actively engage in research and training to this day. He is presently involved with educational institutions such as Vidhyasagar University and other training programs. Additionally, he voluntarily offers his services to the farming community to promote the development of fishery and aquaculture, working closely with organizations like Shri Ramkrishna Ashram and Bharat Seva Ashram.[3]
