Bill Goodwyn is a senior media and ed-tech executive.

Early life and education

Goodwyn was born in Rocky Mount, NC to Irene and Art, a colonel in the U.S. Air Force.[1][2][3] As a result of his father’s military career, he moved numerous times throughout his childhood, including to Tripoli, Libya.[4]

Goodwyn graduated from Tarboro High School in 1978 and went on to attend the University of North Carolina.[5][6] Goodwyn graduated in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in journalism and communication.[7]

Career

Goodwyn was recruited in 1983 to Scripps Howard Company.[8]

Goodwyn then joined Landover, MD-based Discovery Communications in 1987.[9]

Goodwyn served as both President of Global Content Distribution and also CEO of Discovery Education, where he was responsible for the distribution of a portfolio of high-definition, video-on-demand, mobile and digital services.

Discovery Channel became the fastest-growing network in television history and subsequently led distribution for other cable networks, including: The Learning Channel (TLC); Animal Planet; Science Channel; and one of the largest television platforms, consisting of 13 U.S. television networks and $3.0 billion annual revenue.[10][11][12][13]

In 2013, Goodwyn led the acquisition of UK market education leader Espresso, delivering digital content to primary and secondary schools across the United Kingdom.[14]

Awards

Goodwyn recently received the 2017-2018 AdvancED Global Excellence in Education Award for leadership in promoting and advancing excellence in education around the world.[15] [16][17] Goodwyn has received recognition from the NC Media Journalism and Hall of Fame and is annually recognized in The Cablefax 100 list recognizing influential cable executives.[18]

Boards and other affiliations

Goodwyn serves on the UNC Chapel Hill Chancellor’s Philanthropic Council, the T. Howard Foundation,[19] the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP) CEO Members,[20] the CTAM Educational Foundation[21] the Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) Foundation Board,[22] the UNC-Chapel Hill Journalism and Communications School Board of Advisors,[23] and is on the advisory board for EdWeek Market Brief.[24]

Goodwyn previously served on the boards of the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM) and the Alexander Youth Network, and he is formerly a trustee for the Committee for Economic Development (CED).[13]

Personal life

Goodwyn lives with his wife, Leigh, and their two children in Charlotte, N.C.[25]
