Keith Butler, Senior Vice President Global Risk Management & Insurance and Chief Risk Officer at Duke Energy Corporation[1] located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Keith Butler has an extensive and illustrious educational background. He was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. He went to college locally at the North Carolina College at Chapel Hill from 1979- 1983. There Keith studied and earned a bachelor of Science in business administration with a concentration in accounting[3]. North Carolina School at Chapel Hill is ranked #30[4] for national universities. Keith graduated among other notable alumni’s including former U.S. Senator John Edwards, the 11th president of the United States James K. Polk, and former NBA player Rick Fox. With his undergraduate studies finished, Keith became a certified accountant[5]. He landed his first job working at Duke energy in 1984 in the controller department. There he worked diligently, gained promotions and advanced in the accounting and finance fields at duke energy. In the year 2010 Keith attended Duke University the Fuqua school of business and earned a degree in the advanced management program[6]. He went on to finish his education at Harvard Business School where he completed a certificate program in Risk Management for Corporate Leaders. Keith serves on several advisory boards including the Enterprise Risk Management Initiative advisory board for the Poole College of Management at N.C. State University, he is a part of the Strategic Risk council of the Conference Board.[7] Since being certified as a public accountant Keith has joined the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants. Butler has leadership experience outside of duke energy. He is the chairman of board of the directors of MeckEd. Keith being a lover of education began chairing MeckEd which is a non-profit geared towards bringing great public education programs to children in Mecklenburg County. Being a devout Catholic Keith gives back to his religious institution by becoming a member of the Finance council of the St Matthew Catholic Church in Charlotte.

Keith Butler joined Duke Energy, one of America’s biggest energy companies in 1984 and began with a small position within accounting. He worked his way up the ladder, working in various departments such as financing, accounting, and development, and in just ten years, he received the title of vice president. 4 years later, he was promoted to chief financial officer as well as vice president of Duke Energy Global and in just a few months, chief financial officer of Duke Energy North America. The following year, he was promoted to chief operating officer of Duke Solutions. From 2001 to 2006, he was vice president and controller of Duke Energy and was then promoted to vice president of tax in December 2006 (Bloomberg). From then to now, he’s served as the senior vice president of global risk and is the chief risk officer. As chief risk officer, he’s in charge of all types of risk for the company including the market, credit, strategic, and operational and as senior vice president, the insurance companies are also his to handle. Being vice president of tax makes Mr. Butler in charge of various aspects of the tax department such the information systems used to calculate tax and making sure the company is tax compliant in all departments. It also means he’s held accountable for all international, federal, state, and local tax and making sure the company is compliant with Sarbanes-Oxley as well (Duke Energy). Keith G. Butler took the responsibility as senior vice president of Global Risk Management and Insurance at Duke Energy Corporation on 11th February 2016. He has been successfully managing the corporate risk while focusing on the corporate market, operational, credit as well as strategic risk. With his highly efficient risk managing skills, he is additionally made responsible to manage the insurance programs of the company. Butler takes his responsibilities of risk management with more than 30 years of experience and now undertakes the responsibility of chief risk officer of the company. He makes his risk management strategy so efficient that he changed the way of risk management practiced in Duke Energy. He devised the new procedure of selecting the insurance partner where he does not select the partner with highest numbers of insurance policies rather selects the partner that comes together with the advisory role by exhibiting the nuanced understanding of the industry and the strategy of the company. He does not have significant achievement as CRM because he was previously employed as head of tax department and it has been only couple of years he has been assuming the role; however, he has been driving the risk culture in the company.
