Music journalist, author, and speaker Bill Kopp specializes in the popular music of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. A rock/pop music historian, the writer, now based in Asheville, North Carolina, has published two books (a third is under contract), hundreds of articles, and more than 4,500 blog entries for his website [1]. The former Editor-in-Chief for the national music magazine Skope (2005-2008), Kopp became a Contributing Editor[2] to Goldmine magazine in 2019.

Early career[edit]
With a BBA degree from Georgia State University in marketing, journalism, and advertising, Bill Kopp got his professional start as a writer for the online version of Trouser Press, the New York-based rock and roll magazine that Ira Robbins published from 1974 to 1984.
Editorial roles[edit]
Kopp held the position of Editor-in-Chief of the print magazine Skope from 2005 to 2008. He also worked as a copy editor for Toronto’s The Spill Magazine in 2016 and as the Jazz Desk Editor and Prog Editor at BLURT from 2016 to 2020. Kopp has served as a Contributing Editor to Goldmine magazine since 2019.
Musoscribe website[edit]
Launching his website Musoscribe in 2009, Kopp has published new content on the site every business day since then. The 4000-plus interviews, essays, and reviews on Musoscribe reflect Kopp's keen interest in American musical forms, most notably rock, jazz, and soul. His work features a special emphasis on reissues and vinyl.
Books[edit]
Bill Kopp’s first book, Reinventing Pink Floyd: From Syd Barrett to the Dark Side of the Moon, was published by Rowman & Littlefield in hardcover in 2018 and in paperback in 2019. HoZac Books published his second book, Disturbing the Peace: 415 Records and the Rise of New Wave, in 2021. A third book, What's the Big Idea: 40 Great Concept Albums, will be published in 2024 by HoZac Books.

Kopp's work also appears in more than 65 publications, both online and in print across the US and UK. A contributing editor at Goldmine, he often writes for altweeklies Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) and Metro Silicon Valley (San Jose, CA). Kopp has interviewed and written features on more than a thousand musical artists. He’s reported on the Bonnaroo, Moogfest, Hopscotch, Yep Roc 15, Dig!, Ponderosa Stomp, Big Ears, Americana Music Association, Mountain Oasis, Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival, Asheville Electro Music Fest, San Jose Jazz Fests, Transfigurations II, Lollapalooza, and Echo Project festivals.
Public engagements, teaching and event hosting[edit]
Based in Asheville, NC, Kopp regularly hosts lecture-discussions on artists and albums of historical importance. In 2022, he launched Music to Your Ears, a monthly live-and-in-person discussion series focusing on classic albums, held at the Asheville Guitar Bar. He also hosts the monthly Music Movie Mondays series at Asheville’s Grail Moviehouse.
Kopp has given talks and book readings at North and South Carolina venues on his books Reinventing Pink Floyd and Disturbing the Peace as well as on Shuggie Otis and Freedom Flight, Isaac Hayes’ Black Moses, The Beatles, and “Rock Songwriters on the Creative Process.”[4] He also moderated a panel on Disturbing the Peace at the San Francisco Public Library[5] in 2022, featuring members of Wire Train, Red Rockers and Translator plus fellow music journalist and author Denise Sullivan.
In March through May 2023, Kopp taught a class entitled “Rock and Roll in Popular Culture: The 1950s and 1960s”[6] for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. His co-instructor for the course was Elliot Cahn, retired music industry lawyer and founding guitarist in rock and roll group Sha Na Na.
Radio and podcast appearances[edit]
Kopp is a frequent guest and interviewee on music-focused radio programs and podcasts such as Asheville Free Media, the University of Oregon's KWVA, That Eric Alper on Sirius XM, WMGK 102.9 Classic Rock Philadelphia, the Goldmine Magazine Podcast, The Pat Walsh Show on Sacramento’s KFBK-FM, “Wake Up Tucson” with Chris DeSimone on KVOI, The Rob Schilling Show on WINA in Charlottesville, VA, and many more. He has also produced interview podcasts for Asheville, NC-based WSFM-LP featuring his conversations with Steve Kilbey of rock band the Church, Tony Levin, bassist/Chapman Stick player for King Crimson and other artists.
Album liner notes, press kits, album package designs, and artist biographies[edit]
Kopp has researched and written liner notes for more than 30 CD reissues of albums[7] by Brotherhood, Iron Butterfly, Rick Wakeman, Bobby Lance, Diamond Rio, The Ventures, Edgar Winter, Larry Coryell, Survivor, Ben Folds, Dan Fogelberg, Dave Mason, and many others. He’s also authored liner note essays for four reissue albums by jazz legend Julian Cannonball Adderley.
Kopp has authored press kits and/or news releases for World Party, Govt Mule, Gin Blossoms, Holly Golightly, Cary Grace, Billy Jonas, and others, and wrote several artist biographical entries for the Amoeba Records website.
