Bill Montgomery was an American who was a generous supporter of the group, Turning Point USA, a section 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by Charlie Kirk.[1][2] Montgomery often described himself as the group's co-founder, although it was not an official recognition by the group or Kirk.[3] Montgomery died July 28, 2020 at the age of 80 due to coronavirus complications. Turning Point USA memorialized Montgomery for his role in elevating Kirk, and as the "first believer" and "senior advisor" of the organization.[3]
Career[edit]
Montgomery's career was in advertising and real estate.[4] He was also a former restaurateur.[5]
Politics[edit]
In May 2012, Montgomery attended a panel discussion at Benedictine University's "Youth Empowerment Day," and was impressed with a speech by the young Charlie Kirk, who was 18 years old at the time.[6] He described Kirk's speech as “practically Reaganesque”,[5] and encouraged him to postpone college and engage full-time in political activism. In June 2012, the day after Kirk graduated from high school, he founded Turning Point USA, a section 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.[2] Montgomery became Kirk's mentor, and worked behind the scenes handling the paperwork for the organization.[5]
At the 2012 Republican National Convention, Kirk met Republican donor Foster Friess and persuaded him to finance the organization.[7]
Private life[edit]
Montgomery was married, and had a son and a daughter.[8] According to two of his friends, Montgomery died July 28, 2020 at the age of 80 due to coronavirus complications.[9]
