Devi Vimala is a Peeth of 51 Sati Peeths.[3][4] According to Peethanaya Tantra. Uṯkalē nābhidēśasta birajā kṣētra mucyatē. Bimalā sā dēbī jagannātha stu bhairabaḥ..

  • Bimala Devi is one of the personifications of Adi Parashakti and the presiding deity of Puri, one of the four Adi Shaktipeeths. Her Bhairava is Jagannath. In Shaktmat, Balabhadra and Jagannath are her gatekeepers and protectors. Subhadra is her lover. Many identify her as a virgin or celibate. Bimala's worshipers say that she is the empress of Puri (like Tripurasundari). She is also identified by many as the mother of Jagannath. Her temple is situated on the premises of Jagannath temple. She is the goddess of Matangi clan. The ninth stanza of the Adya Stotram mentions this Shaktipeeth:
  • Rāmēśbarī sētubandhē bimalā puruṣōttamē | birajā auḍradēśē ca kāmākṣyā nīlaparbatē ||9||

Iconography

It is improper to chant her meditation mantras without matangi initiation. According to Dhyanmantra, she is standing on Shwetavarna, Quadruphuja, Shwetapadma. She holds Ankush, Pash, Japmala and Kamandalu in her four hands respectively. On either side of her, Chaya and Maya, the nurses, are chanting chamar. Vimala Devi Uchishta Chandalini (similar to Matangi Devi. Sometimes seen holding goddess and dragon girl respectively instead of pasa and ankush. Also has snake instead of pasa. Her vehicle is lion (Vishnurupi).

The legend

Devi Bhagavata is found in Gayayang Mangala Prokta Vimala Purushottam. When Goddess Tripurasundari emerged from the sacrificial fire to slay Bhandasura, eight forms emerged from the seventh mantle of her Chakraraja chariot. The eight deities of speech in this chakra are Vasini, Kameshwari, Modini, Vimala, Aruna, Jaini, Sarveswari, Kaulini. Vimala Devi is one of these eight forms. Kabikkankan Mukundaram says,

  • Samīpē bimalā dēbī, yāhāra caraṇa sēbi hari bhābē haiẏā dr̥ṛhamanā.. Tyajē nara sansāra bāsanā. Saṅgē guha lambōdara, ē'i sthānē ā'ila hara, subhadrā balā'i sāthē, dēkha bhā'i jagannāthē, sam'mukhē garuṛa mahābīra. Śuci haẏē kara phōṭā, pradakṣiṇa maṇi kauṭā, kara bhā'i baikuṇṭha mandira..

Rath Yatra

It is said that Goddess Subhadra is an incarnation of Vimala. Chariot of Goddess Subhadra has various forms of Vimala as a byproduct. On the left are Shyamakali, Mangala and Bimala. Goddess Vimala is situated as a side deity in her own Subhadra form. On the right side of the chariot are Chandi, Chamunda and Ugratara. In the back are Barahi, Bandurga and Shulidurga.

Left over Chandalini

As Bimala Devi is the goddess of the Matangi clan, she also eats leftover food like Matangi. Offering leftover prasad to deities is prohibited in Hinduism. However, in Tantrachara there is a case of offering large amounts of food. A story is popular among the Vaishnavas about this. Lord Shiva once while meeting Lord Vishnu in Golakdham, saw a few pieces of food falling from Vishnu's food plate on the ground. Mahadeva worshiped Vishnu and Vishnu worshiped Mahadeva.
