"Biutyful" is a song by British rock band Coldplay from their ninth studio album, Music of the Spheres. It was released as the third promotional single from the record on 6 July 2022 alongside a music video featuring the fictional band "The Weirdos",[1] which were credited as a featured artist on the song.
Background[edit]
The Weirdos[edit]
The Weirdos are a fictional alien puppet band that are purportedly featured on "Biutyful" alongside Coldplay following their signing to Atlantic Records in June 2022, according to frontman Chris Martin. The band's members include singer Angel Moon, drummer Donk, guitarist Sparkman, keyboardist the Wizard, and manager Bruce Cakemix.[2] Prior to the release of "Biutyful", Martin had said that Angel Moon appeared on "Cry Cry Cry", a song from Coldplay's previous studio album Everyday Life (2019).[3] The puppets for the fictional band were created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, who also created The Muppets.[4]
Critical reception[edit]
Ryan Dombal from Pitchfork considered "Biutyful" the best song from the album, noting that "guided by a simple acoustic guitar figure and an unfussy hip-hop beat, it is the rare Spheres track that is given any space to consider itself".[5] He also praised the "nostalgic and enchanting" vocals, "which is especially impressive since [Chris Martin] spends half the song pitched-up to sound like a squeaky alien".[5] On the other hand, The Times' Will Hodgkinson commented the song appropriates "robotic vocals of Korean pop but lacks the experimental production that makes that genre so groundbreaking".[6]
Music video[edit]
A music video for the song directed by Mat Whitecross was released on 6 July 2022, with the story being written by Whitecross, Chris Martin, and actress Dakota Johnson. The video depicts the origin story of the Weirdos, with the alien puppet group going from being rejected by society to becoming the "most popular band on Earth". Coldplay makes a cameo appearance in the audience of the Weirdos' concert.[7]
Live performances[edit]
Chris Martin and The Weirdos performed the song live on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on 10 June 2022.[2] Angel Moon, the lead singer of the Weirdos, has appeared at live performances of the song during the Music of the Spheres World Tour.[8]
