}} Black Ruby is an American drama film. The third film by Ave Fenix Pictures, it is the first feature film to be shot with the Iphone 7.[3][4][5]
Premise[edit]
Jules and Louis, two hustlers and jazz musicians struggle to create a hit song planned to put Jules on the path to stardom when a Black-Hispanic escort named Ruby interrupts their lives distracting their music and causing Louis to street fight his friend's debts away.[6][7][8]

Production[edit]
Production was completed in Chicago in September 2017. The film director credit was given to La Raza, based off the La Raza filmmaking method founded by Ave Fenix Pictures.[9][10]
Release[edit]
The film premiered at the London Independent Film Festival and was the Official Selection at the Rome Independent Film Awards and Los Angeles Film Festival.[11][12]
The film was picked up in 2018 by Hollywood executive Eric Doctorow who worked with Paramount, Fox, MGM and Miramax before launching his distribution company Random Media.[13] Random Media released Black Ruby in early 2019 in partnership with The Orchard and Sony Pictures.[14][15][16]
Reception[edit]
Zachary Laoutides was recipient of 9 nominations at the London Independent Film Festival.[17][18] Mónica Esmeralda León and Zachary Laoutides won Best Picture at The Los Angeles Film Festival, with Laoutides winning Best Actor, Best Writer, Best Soundtrack and the Independent Spirit Award. [19][20] The film was released to select theaters on March 19th in the United States and United Kingdom grossing $10,000.[21][22]
Zachary Laoutides changed his eye color, skin tone and hair color to play the role of Louis Katz.[23][24][25] Laoutides was described as a "21st-century Marlon Brando" by the HuffPost.[26][27] That Momentin gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars saying it was impactful with committed performances.[28][29] Film Threat Magazine described the movie as vicious, regressive, and not enlightening.[30][31] Film Snob Reviews found the film confusing and needing more layers.[32]
