Background

On February 24, 2022, Russian troops attacked the territory of Ukraine, including the city of Mariupol.[4] On February 27, Russian troops arrived at the western outskirts of the city from Crimea, and on March 2 the city was encircled.

On March 10, 2022, the DPR announced that they had reached the Azovstal plant and taken control of a number of neighborhoods in Mariupol.

The Ukrainian metallurgical plant "Azovstal" became a major battlefield of the resistance of the Ukrainian Army and the Russian Army.[1] From the very beginning of the Siege of Mariupol, a large number of people took refuge at the plant.[5] As of April 20, 2022, the number of military personnel was approximately 3 thousand people, and at least 200 civilians[5]

The Siege

On April 10, more than a month after the start of the invasion, Russian forces completely isolated the Ukrainian military personnel remaining on the territory of the Azovstal plant, however, due to the fortification work carried out by the Ukrainian forces and the complex structure of Azovstal, the ground assault was greatly complicated. On April 13, the forces of the defenders were replenished with servicemen of the 36th Marine Brigade of the Ukrainian Navy, some of whom broke out of the encirclement from the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works.

At the end of April, the ISW reported that there were no significant achievements of the Russian troops in their attempts to storm Azovstal. In order to suppress Ukrainian resistance and maintain the environment of the plant, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and the NM DPR staged a blockade of the territory of the complex and subjected it to dense artillery and rocket attacks, as well as bombing, including with the use of strategic aviation.
