Publication[edit]
Publication of Bluechair began in 2014 on the webtoon publishing portal Webtoon.[1][2] It was one of the first series by a North American creator on the service.[1] In 2020 Bluechair was updating three times a week, on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday[2] and had over 500 episodes.[3] As of 2021 the comic updates twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays.[4]
Bluechair is written and illustrated by Shen, the pen name of artist Andrew Tsyaston.[5][6] Shen also publishes Live with Yourself on the Webtoon platform and Owlturd (also called Shen Comix) independently.[7]
Style and themes[edit]
Bluechair is a slice of life/comedy comic with episodes (usually)independent of each other. The comic has a light, comedic style; Shen has said that his "comics are usually based on thoughts I have when I forget to think 'no, wait, that's stupid.'"[5] Bluechair comics are presented by Shen's cartoon avatar. While there is no narrative between strips, there is occasional use of a supporting cast of creatures.[2] One reviewer compared the series to 2000s-era "man-on-sofa" webcomics, but noted it differed from those works in that it bears no ill will to anyone.[2]
The art style has changed and developed since its start in 2014. While early strips relied more on shading and a 3D effect, recent strips are more delineated and looser and are drawn with an uneven digital brush".[2]
Reception[edit]
Readership figures[edit]
In 2019, Webtoon reported that Bluechair had received 112 million views and was Webtoon's seventh most popular comic.[8] As of August 2020 the popularity of Bluechair along with the comics Owlturd and Live with Yourself had earned Shen 2 million followers on Instagram.[5]
Awards and reviews[edit]
The comic was nominated for a Ringo Award in 2019 for Best Humor Comic, but lost to DC Comics' Mad magazine.[9][10][11]
in a review at WomenWriteAboutComics, Claire Napier said that the gist of the comic was "a decent guy makes puns or surreal associations or pretty funny rimshot gags, with a fair bit of self-deprecation but no visible contempt." Napier praised the improvement of art over the years, saying that recent strips "appear far more confident, with both body language and hairstyle loosened notably", using "well reduced cartooning". She concluded by saying, "This isn’t the type of strip I need any more, but it’s clearly serving a purpose and looks like a pretty good, influencer-responsible place for kids to get laughs."[2]
Writing for CBR, Saad Shoaib, called Bluechair "highly shareable",[5] while on Geek Girl Authority, reviewer Julia Roth said the series had "a lot of ‘same’ feelings".[3]
