Synopsis[edit]

Following the admission of a serial killer named Joe Mallory that he had murdered transients and buried their bodies in the woods outside a remote Alaskan town, protagonist Paul Gallo travels to the town of Dread's Hand, Alaska, to see if his missing twin brother, Danny, is among the dead. When Danny's body is not recovered from the makeshift burial site, Paul begins a search for him, yet is consistently roadblocked and dissuaded by the uncooperative residents of Dread's Hand who are seemingly keeping secrets about Danny from him.

Meanwhile, Jill Ryerson, a detective with the Alaska State Troopers, arrives to investigate the murders and to arrest Mallory. Upon Mallory's arrest, he begins talking about the reasons for his acts of violence, and that the people he'd murdered were all possessed by a devil-like entity that roams the woods surrounding Dread's Hand. These possessed people were supposedly turned "bone white," or the Inuit translation of the term, which means they were corrupted by evil and unholy. In this regard, Mallory considers himself something of a savior, though he could not reconcile what he'd had to do to these people, which was why he turned himself in.

Paul ultimately locates Danny staying at a remote cabin in the woods on the outskirts of the Arctic Circle, where Danny confesses to having taken over the gatekeeping duties of Joe Mallory, which means he is now living out here killing those he believes to be possessed by the devil-like entity that roams the forest. Paul, being the pragmatic one of the two, believes his brother has lost his mind, and that he needs to be brought out of the woods where Paul can get him help. Danny refuses to leave, so Paul decides to burn the cabin down so they would have no choice but to return to civilization, since they can't face the brutal weather without shelter. As the cabin burns, Danny screams that Paul has doomed them both, since the protective crosses Danny had set up around the perimeter of the cabin are also burning. It is then that a devil-like thing appears and attacks both brothers. Ultimately, it is Danny who saves his brother Paul by stabbing the creature and then dragging it over a cliff with him, where both he and the creature fall to their deaths. Later, when Paul peers over the side of the cliff, he sees his brother's body beside the corpse of a giant black wolf.

Reception[edit]

The novel received mostly positive reviews. Horror Novel Reviews called Bone White "absolute beauty [that] grips intensely from the first page until the chilling conclusion,"[3] while This Is Horror UK said, "Malfi is clearly a great writer with a skill for descriptive language and strong characters."[4] Cemetery Dance Publications said, "The atmosphere is claustrophobic and tense, and the suspense is so very well crafted."[5] Conversely, Publishers Weekly was less impressed, stating, "Malfi's creepy prose is stolidly workmanlike, with plentiful hair-raising enigmas and copious gore, but it's lacking the depth of emotion that would raise it to the truly terrifying."[6]
