Bookaway is a travel tech startup based in Tel Aviv, Israel and Bangkok, Thailand.

Founded in 2017 by Noam Toister (CEO), David Yitzhaki (CMO), Omer Chehmer (COO) and Jonathan Bensaid[1] (CTO), Bookaway aims to enable travelers to find, compare, and book bus, train and ferry tickets as well as private transportation online.[2] [3]

Data coverage[edit]

Bookaway operates in over 40[4][5] countries including Vietnam, Thailand, The Philippines, Peru, Colombia, Italy, Greece, and Croatia, to name a few. As of September 2019, Bookaway provides online booking services for over 1,000 distinct routes by working closely with over 400 local suppliers, which provide over 5,000 transportation lines[6]

History[edit]

The idea of Bookaway came to life during Noam Toister’s trip to the Philippines in 2016 [7]as he was looking for bus tickets from Manila to Banaue. Realizing there isn’t a simple way to book transport tickets online, Noam created an online landing page that offers one route – Manila to Banaue, operated by Bookaway’s first supplier - local travel agency.

In 2017, Bookaway managed to cover most routes across Southeast Asia.[8] [9] In the Summer of 2018, the travel tech company entered the European market and in the beginning of 2019, it entered Latin America. [10][11]

At the end of 2018 the company raised a seed investment round of $1 million. Angel investors were the primary investors.[12]

In March 2019, Google announced that Bookaway was chosen to take part in its prominent Startup Growth Lab, and in April 2019[13][14][15] Facebook announced that Bookaway will participate in its exclusive Startup Growth Program.[16]
