In Winter, 1963, East German border guard Dieter Hertwig intends to defect to the west. He has arranged for his daughter to meet him on the Western side, and constructed makeshift crampons in order to climb the heavily-fortified border fence. When a second patrol arrives unexpected early, Hertwig must conceal his plans, else risk being revealed to the authorities.[2]
