Borderline (artwork)
Borderline is a conceptual installation established in Alingsås[1] by Swedish artists Pål Hollender and Bo Melin.[2] During the day, the installation looks like a closed-down nightclub with sculptures resembling a bar disk, a couch, a ceiling lamp, and a lounge suite.[3][4] From 21:00 to 7:00, when the gallery is closed, the installation plays loud, electronic music and has strobe lighting; no one is allowed to enter the "nightclub", though it can be experienced from outside the installation.[3][4][5]
Interpretation
Contemporalism
The piece is about the borderline between real and imagined, manifesting this with a secluded (imagined) nightclub and an inclusive (real) nightclub – manifesting and reinventing itself in a non-scripted way.[6][7][8]
Postmodernism
The piece is about the borderline between modern concepts such as sanity and insanity; good and bad; art and not art, and manifests this in the always open but yet always closed nightclub.[3]
Modernism
The piece is about exclusion and the apparent existence of certain modern concepts in all parts of the world – although sometimes in a highly secluded way.[9] See for example the Baghdad Hunting Club in Irak.[3]
Classicism
The piece is making way for a club that's never really opened but yet is very much alive as it is functional at night; playing techno music in a loud volume, and then, after seven o'clock in the morning, remains in that state and is so opened for art visitors.[3][10]
