Boredroom News

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Boredroom News is an American news satire organization that reports on business, finance, and technology. Based in New York City, Boredroom News covers current events, both real and fictional, satirizing the tone and format of conventional business news organizations using a traditional news website layout and an editorial voice modeled after The New York Times, and the usage of the AP Style of news writing.

History[edit]

The articles of Boredroom News mostly revolve around the coverage of real or imaginary events in a satirical and offbeat way, with focus on the business world of banking consulting, and other professional services with their attendant lifestyles. Boredroom News was founded at Columbia Business School by members of the Follies comedy troupe, a musical sketch comedy student club, before being transformed to becoming a website. Since then, many of its articles have been relayed in the press and trhoughout the professional network, LinkedIn

In its about page, the website claims to have been founded in 1936 by brothers Warren and Milton Boredroom, although such claims have not been entirely substantiated. The identity of the curators is yet unknown, in a recent interview one of the anonymous personalities, identified only as "Janet, from Accounting," flatly declined to be identified stating that "to protect the various financial interests of the site's various proprietors, all staff reporters have been stripped of their personal identities."

Controversy[edit]

Many users of social media have taken Boredroom News articles to be literal (especially those which address controversial topics), and have expressed their anger and confusion online. Most notably, during the 2019–20 Hong Kong protests, Boredroom News suffered a minor cybersecurity attack in retaliation for running an article concerning the video game publisher Blizzard Entertainment and their ties to the mainland Chinese regime.[1]
