Bothrops muriciensis, also known as the Murici lancehead or Jararacuçu de Murici, is a venomous species of pit viper found in the Atlantic rainforest of northeastern Brazil.[2][3] The snake is named after the Murici Ecological Station, where it was first discovered.
Description[edit]
The Murici lancehead is a medium-sized snake, typically growing to 70-80 cm in length. It has a slender body and a distinctive, elongated head. Its coloration consists of various shades of brown, gray, and black, often with distinct markings.
Distribution and habitat[edit]
The Murici lancehead is exclusively found in the Atlantic rainforest of northeastern Brazil, specifically in the states of Alagoas and Pernambuco. It inhabits primary and secondary forests, as well as degraded forest areas and plantations. This terrestrial snake is rarely found far from the ground.
Venom[edit]
The venom of the Murici lancehead is highly toxic and can cause severe injury or death. Bites require immediate medical attention, with symptoms including pain, swelling, blistering, bleeding, shock, and organ failure.
Conservation status[edit]
Classified as "Critically Endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Murici lancehead faces threats from habitat loss due to logging and agriculture. It is also hunted for its skin, used in traditional medicine and the pet trade.[1]
In captivity[edit]
Experienced reptile keepers sometimes keep the Murici lancehead in captivity. However, its venomous nature makes it unsuitable for inexperienced or casual keepers. It requires a well-ventilated enclosure with a temperature gradient and hiding places. Handling should be done with caution to avoid stress and provocation.
