Bowdon Preparatory School for Girls is an independent primary school for Girls aged 3 to 11 years in the borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. In 2011 Bowden Preparatory School moved from Stamford Road to Ashley Road after merging with Culcheth Hall School.

History of Bowden Preparatory School[edit]

In 1983 Bowdon Preparatory School was opened as a proprietorial school by the Former head teacher, Mrs Jane Tan. The school was located at 48 Stamford Road, Bowdon, Altrincham WA14 2JP.[1][2][3] In January 2011 Culcheth Hall School announced that it was going to close after 120 years due to a decline in pupil numbers. Bowdon Preparatory School began discussing a merger of the two schools.[4] In March 2011 parents and staff members of Bowdon Preparatory School created a charitable trust to enable the merger and take over of Culcheth Hall School.[5][6][7] In 2013 Mrs Jane Tan retired and Mrs Helen Gee was appointed as Head Teacher by the School Governors.[3] On the 15 November 2015, at The Royal Northern College of Music an event "The Poppies Blow" was organised by Altrincham Choral Society.[8] On the 6 November 2017 Bowdon Preparatory School for Girl's Chamber Choir sang carols at a fundraiser for St Ann's Hospice.[9]

Culcheth Hall School[edit]

In 1863 a Ladies Seminary, Culcheth Hall New was established by Miss Kate Dorrington and Mrs Eliza Williamson a widow, who since 1841 had been running Culcheth Hall in Newton Heath.[10][11]

In 1880 Culcheth Hall New closed and the building became a private home, to Ellis Lever (1833–1911), who lived here with his wife Catherine and their children.[12]

Ellis Lever was embroiled in The Salford Gas Scandal of 1887 with Samuel Hunter the manager of Salford Gas Corporation. Ellis had written a telegram to the Mayor accusing Samuel of taking bribes and was in return sued for libel by Samuel.[13][14][15][16] Ellis won and had endeavoured to rid corruption within gas contracting. In March 1888 Samuel Hunter was prosecuted for perjury and forgery, He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour. In August 1889 the council restarted negotiations with Samuel Hunter, He deposited £10,000 of securities into a bank account. The Council proposed that Hunter name the firms that he had received bribes from and they would issue threats of legal proceedings with the option of an out of court settlement if they made a deposit to the bank account. The council would receive £10,000 and Samuel Hunter could keep the remainder. Most of the firms paid up but Ellis Lever was sued in Leeds Court for a sum of £2,300, he had been paying bribes to Samuel Hunter for over ten years.[17][18][19]

In 1890 the building was divided into two and was rented by The Lang Sisters, Edith, Mary and Helen[20] [11]In 1891 Culcheth Hall School began with only thirteen pupils in the south side of the building. In 1889 Helen Lang Died, Edith Lang took over the responsibility of the girls education and Mary Lang took on the responsibilities of domestic arrangements and bursar.[21] By 1903 the school had 100 pupils and the Lang sisters purchased the North side of the building.[22] [23]In 1920 Mary Lang died, Edith retired and Mrs A.C.Hackforth was made Head Teacher.[11][24][25]

Clucheth Hall School was given a Blue Plaque with the following wording "Culcheth Hall School 1891-2011 Founded by the Lang sisters for the promotion of girls' education Suspiciens ut bellis"[26][27]
