Brian A. Wong (born May 15, 1974) is an American internet executive, entrepreneur and angel investor currently serving as vice president of Global Initiatives at Alibaba Group and a member of the Alibaba Academic Committee.[1] He is also the Founder and Chairman of RADII Media.[2]
Early life and Education[edit]
Wong was born and raised in Palo Alto, California. He did his high school at Palo Alto High School. He earned a BA degree in Pre-Medical studies and English literature from Swarthmore College.[3] He also holds an MA Certificate in International Relations from Johns Hopkins (SAIS)-Nanjing U Center and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.[4]
Career[edit]
After graduating from the university, Wong worked as Special Assistant to San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown Jr.[5] He later joined Alibaba Group, the renowned global Chinese e-commerce company after meeting Jack Ma and Joe Tsai in San Francisco in 1999.[6][7] He joined the company as the first American and as its 52nd employee.[8]
Wong is currently the vice president of Alibaba Group.[9][10][11][12] He was responsible for executive leadership development as Executive Director of Alibaba Global Leadership Academy (AGLA).[13][14] He served as the special assistant to the Executive Chairman for international affairs.[15] He spearheaded Alibaba.com’s international expansion.[16][17]
Wong has been an advisor to various governments on their digital transformation strategies and has been featured as a speaker at international conferences.[18][19][20][21]
Wong is the founder and Chairman of RADII, a digital media platform.[22][23][24] He is also the co-founder of Operation Masks, a non-profit created by a group of entrepreneurs who want to contribute to the fight against COVID-19.[25][26]
Wong served as a member of the Wharton School Alumni Executive Board[27] and presently serves on Swarthmore College's Council on Presidential Initiatives.[28] He is frequent speaker and lecturer on the benefits of the role of the digital economy in promoting more inclusive development for all.[29]
Honors[edit]
Wong was selected as a Young Global Leader in 2015 by the World Economic Forum.[5] He was also selected as a member of the Aspen Institute’s 4th class of China Fellows and is a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.[30]
Wong is also a member of the Committee 100, a distinguished group of Chinese-Americans.[31][32]
