Brian Miller Adesman is a former talent manager and current litigator, trial lawyer,[1] and legal correspondent practicing law in Los Angeles, California, who is known for making social change through litigating cases against high profile public figures[2] and institutions.[3] Brian Adesman is the founder and principal of the law firm Miller Adesman, PLC,[1] and has been named a "powerhouse" attorney by several mainstream media outlets.[4]

Many of Brian Adesman's recent cases have garnered widespread media attention, including a federal class action lawsuit that Adesman filed against major health insurance company, Aetna,[5] as well as a recent civil action that Adesman filed against Caesar the "Dog Whisperer" Millan, in which Adesman alleged Millan's pit bull killed Queen Latifah's dog and that Millan covered up the attack by falsely alleging Latifah's dog was struck by a car.[6] This story was never made public until Adesman filed the complaint against Millan in court.[7] Brian Adesman has been credited with pioneering a unique litigation strategy that is equally aggressive as it is creative, to achieve favorable results for his clients.

Early Life[edit]

Brian Adesman's mother is Dr. Robin Miller,[8] a practicing medical doctor who specializes in integrative medicine, author, and medical reporter.[9] Brian Adesman's father is Dr. Peter Adesman,[8] a practicing gastroenterologist and wine maker.[10] Brian Adesman has one brother, David Adesman, who is two years older.[11]

Brian Adesman attended high school at St. Mary's School where he made the honor roll,[12] played varsity football,[13] and was ranked as one of the top linebackers in the Southern Cascade League as a sophomore.[14]

Education[edit]

Brian Adesman graduated from the University of Oregon, summa cum laude, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts with a 4.03 GPA.[15] Adesman went on to earn his Juris Doctor from USC Gould School of Law.[16] During law school, Brian Adesman was employed by Legendary Entertainment, in the company's Business & Legal Affairs department, where he drafted "various agreements including: option purchase agreements, director agreements, producer agreements, and writer agreements."[17] Upon graduation, Brian Adesman was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society.[18]

Early Career[edit]

Since middle school, Brian Adesman has played many musical instruments, including guitar and piano, which inspired him to form several rock bands as a teenager.[19] Eventually, Adesman became more interested in the business-side of music, rather than creative, and decided to manage rock bands while studying at the University of Oregon.[20] There, Adesman scouted talent, signed artists, booked full-length concert tours, secured radio air-time, and produced full-length studio rock albums.[21] After managing rock bands, Adesman had little-to-no interest in becoming a lawyer and, instead, wanted to work in the entertainment industry as a talent agent, which he credits to his infatuation with the popular television series Entourage.[22] In fact, when discussing his idiosyncratic career path on a recent podcast, Adesman claimed that all his “career choices in life have been tethered to whatever TV shows [he] was watching at the time,” explaining “I was watching Entourage a lot, so I wanted to be a talent agent. Before that, I wanted to be a plastic surgeon because I was watching Nip/Tuck.”[23]

After working at various high-profile talent agencies and public relations firms in New York and Los Angeles, Brian Adesman developed a new interest in becoming a movie producer, which is why he subsequently enrolled at USC Gould School of Law.[24] At the time, Adesman believed a law degree would provide him a competitive edge to break into the highly competitive world of film production, which is why he chose to attend USC. At USC, Adesman enrolled in several classes at USC's School of Cinematic Arts where he studied film production, among other things. But while in law school, Adesman naturally gravitated toward the more traditional path of becoming a lawyer and eventually put his dreams of producing films on hold, so he could practice law.[24]

After graduating law school, Brian Adesman became a member of the state bar of California[1] and also later joined the state bar of Washington.[25]

After earning his JD, Adesman first worked for the AmLaw 100 law firm Jenner & Block[26] for over five years,[27] where he focused his practice primarily on complex commercial litigation,[28] legal malpractice defense litigation,[29] and international dispute resolution.[30] Early in his career at Jenner, Adesman successfully defended world-famous rapper and business mogul Jay-Z in a lawsuit over Jay-Z's hit song Big Pimpin', where Adesman's trial team successfully defeated all claims against Jay-Z at trial.[31][32] Jay-Z references his "Jewish lawyer[s]" in several songs, which some speculate is a nod to Adesman, among Jay's several other "Jewish lawyers."[33]

After five years at Jenner & Block, Adesman wanted to branch out and gain more trial experience, so he founded his own plaintiff-side law firm, Miller Adesman, PLC, in 2021.[30][34]

Notable Cases[edit]

On September 11, 2021, Brian Adesman filed a class action complaint against major health insurance company Aetna in federal court, in which Adesman alleged that "in administering the Aetna Plans, Aetna treats mental health as less important than physical health."[35] When asked for a comment about the lawsuit, Adesman was reported in the media saying, "Insurance companies are not above the law and profits can’t come before people."[36][37]

That same year, Adesman filed a complaint in California state court that alleged Caesar the "Dog Whisperer" Millan's pit bull, Junior, attacked and killed Queen Latifah's dog and further alleged that Millan attempted to cover up the incident by telling his staff to falsely inform the actress that her dog was hit and killed by a car.[38] The pit bull also allegedly attacked gymnast Lidia Matiss in 2017 who was named as the plaintiff in the lawsuit.[39] In response to the lawsuit, Millan claimed Matiss had assumed the risk of being attacked because she knew the dog was dangerous and claimed that Matiss was "negligent," though Millan did not specify how.[40] Later, Millan would go on to publicly deny claims that his pit bull attacked Queen Latifah's dog, but Brian Adesman said the following about the incident, during an interview with the media:

Basically, as lawyers, we have a duty to investigate any potential case that we're going to file in court. And we're also considered officers of the court and have an obligation to make sure that any claims we make are supported by evidence, and that they're not frivolous, and that they're not untrue.

And so generally speaking with any case before we draft and file a complaint, we will investigate the surrounding circumstances. And that can entail a bunch of different things up to hiring private investigators or interviewing witnesses, talking with people who were around the scene of the incident at that time.

And [the fact that Junior Killed Queen Latifah's dog] was something that we uncovered and definitely corroborated with lots of evidence. And it's currently, it's something that they deny and that Cesar Millan has denied ever since the story broke. But I can assure you that I have seen the evidence and we feel very confident in making that claim that [the attack] did, in fact, happen.[30]

This story was never made public until Adesman filed the complaint in court.[41]

Pro Bono Practice[edit]

Brian Adesman's pro bono practice focuses on helping victims of domestic violence. Adesman has worked closely with California's Family Violence Appellate Project to accomplish this goal.[42] Additionally, Adesman worked alongside the American Civil Liberties Union to successfully challenge an unlawful city ordinance in the city of Hesperia, California, which barred two or more unrelated individuals on probation from living together.[43] Adesman, alongside the ACLU, filed a class action complaint in the United States District Court for the Central District of California against the city of Hesperia and the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, alleging that the two ordinances were unconstitutional in that they violated state and federal Equal Protection and Due Process rights.[43]
