Brian Alessandro (born January 19, 1977) is a fiction writer, screenwriter, filmmaker, and essayist , who is from Queens, New York. He is the co-editor (with Tom Cardamone) of 'Fever Spores: The Queer Reclamation of William S. Burroughs' and the co-adapter of Edmund White’s '’A Boy'’s Own Story'’ graphic novel with Michael Carroll and Igor Karash. He has also written for Interview Magazine, Newsday.[1], Huffington Post, and PANK[2], a literary journal founded by Roxane Gay, and hosts Culture Connection, a weekly talk show featuring writers, filmmakers, journalists, and artists for the Queens Public Library. Early life and education[edit]

Alessandro was born in the Bronx, raised in Queens, and has lived for periods in Manhattan, Tucson, Arizona, Pune, India, and throughout China. He now resides in New Jersey with his husband. He obtained a BFA from the New York Institute of Technology and an MA in clinical psychology from Columbia University [4]

Career[edit]

Alessandro taught high school courses in film, psychology, and health and college courses at Pima Community College in sexuality, gender, psychology, and human development.[5]

His first feature film, Afghan Hound, was produced by MaryeaMedia in 2010 and co-starred Lavrenti Lopes[6], Matt McGorry of Orange is the New Black and How to Get Away with Murder [7], and Rushi Kota, of Grey’s Anatomy and Never Have I Ever [8]. His first novel, The Unmentionable Mann, was published by Cairn Press in 2015 and was reviewed by Huffington Post In 2016, Alessandro founded the literary journal The New Engagement, which published original work by Richard Howard, Alden Jones, Edmund White, and Michael Carroll. From 2019 to 2022, Alessandro contributed interviews and book reviews to Interview Magazine and Newsday.[10]

Also in 2022, Alessandro co-edited Fever Spores: The Queer Reclamation of William S Burroughs with Tom Cardamone[11], published by Rebel Satori Press.. The anthology contains 25 essays by LGBTQIA+ writers seeking to reclaim Burroughs into the gay literary canon. Contributors include Charlie Vazquez, Peter Dube, Paul Russell, Trebor Healey, Gregory Woods, and James Grauerholz. The anthology also features original interviews with Fran Lebowitz, Tony Kushner, Debbie Harry, Chris Stein, David Cronenberg, Samuel R. Delany, Chris Kelso, and Legs McNeil. It was published by Rebel Satori Press. The book was profiled in Interview Magazine[12] and reviewed by Newsday[13] and The Atlantic.

Future Projects[edit]

In November 2022, Alessandro’s graphic novel co-adaptation (along with Michael Carroll and Igor Karash) of Edmund White’s 1982 novel A Boy’s Own Story will be released by Top Shelf Productions [14].

In March 2023, Alessandro’s second novel, Performer Non Grata, will be published by Rebel Satori Press. The book has received blurbs from Edmund White, Garrard Conley, Junot Diaz, and Manuel Munoz.[15]
