A road leading to Bridai

Bridai is a village in Lithuania. It is a part of the Šiauliai District Municipality and is 8 kilometers north of Šiauliai.

History[edit]

The village was formed at the end of the 16th century, during the Volok Reform. The village was first mentioned in 1769, in a document describing the peasant uprising of Šiauliai economy[1]

From 1949 to 1991, there was a Kolkhoz in the village, the first in Lithuania, headed by Stasys Jonikas and Aloyzas Jocas. A house of culture, a school, shop, canteen, kindergarten, medical centre and retirement home were built. Ponds were dug up and parks of trees were planted. The central street of Bridai was also decorated with luxury chandeliers. After privatization in 1992, most buildings and decorative elements were destroyed, however some some survived[2]. The house of culture, which was visited by Mikhail Gorbachev, was demolished. Bridai primary school closed its doors in 2008.

Mikhail Gorbachev's visit to Bridai[edit]

In 1990, Mikhail Gorbachev visited Lithuania. One of the places he visited was Bridai. Bridai was chosen for three reasons, an invitation from Mindaugas Stankvilevičius, the proximity to Zokniai Airport, and because the farm was famous for its economic activities. Gorbachev visited various workplaces around Bridai and also visited the kindergarten.[3]

Population[edit]

As of 2011, the village has 317[4] residents, with its peak being 456 residents in 1997.

Geography[edit]

The village is located in the northern part of the Šiauliai rural eldership. The village is 97-100 meters above sea level. It is located in the ethnographic region of Samogitia however only some residents speak Samogitian.
