Bridgewater Chocolate is a Brookfield, Connecticut-based premium chocolate and confectionery company established in 1995. Bridgewater's products are hand-made.[1] Bridgewater Chocolate is the largest premium confectionery manufacturer and distributor in Connecticut,[2] and offers many retail locations in the United States and the Middle East, specializing in a variety of products by region.[3]
History
Bridgewater Chocolate was founded in 1995 by Erik Landergen, who emigrated from Sweden to the United States in 1987.[1] He had previously, right after arriving in the United States, founded a seasonal Nordic cuisine restaurant known as Aquivit, which operated in New York City.[1][4] In 1999, Landergen was joined by Andrew Blauner as his business partner.[1]
In a 2009 book by Jane and Michael Stern, the company's truffles were considered to be "the nation's best".[5]
In 2010, Bridgewater Chocolate produced over 80,000 pounds of chocolate from their confectionery in Brookfield.[6] It is reported that twenty percent of all annual sales take place in February around Valentine's Day.[7]
In 2016, the company partnered with Alshaya and expanded its operations into Kuwait, being their first location in the Middle East.[8] The company subsequently opened retail stores in Bahrain and Qatar.[9]
Retail
The Brookfield, Connecticut facility has been described as a factory store, and a second Connecticut store was established in West Hartford before 2016.[1]
The chocolate is available variously in Connecticut, and at both Bridgewater stores. Known mail-order customers of the company include Celine Dion, Russell Crowe, and Gwyneth Paltrow. Upscale New York City grocery Dean & DeLuca are also purveyors.[10] In 2016, a branch opened at the Mall of Qatar.[11] In 2017, a branch opened at Doha Festival City.[12]
