Brightside Roadside is an upcoming British roadside restaurant chain, proposed to launch in early 2023, by Loungers.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

History[edit]

Background[edit]

In 1958, Sam Alper launched the UK's first major roadside restaurant chain, Little Chef. The chain would grow rapidly throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and would go on to acquire its only roadside competitor, Happy Eater, which would merge into Little Chef in 1997.[7] In 2018, after various attempts to revive the brand, Little Chef finally ceased existence when its owners, Kout Food Group, sold its remaining 70 locations to EG Group for them to convert into their partner franchise brands, such as Starbucks and Greggs.[8] Despite expressing interest in franchising the Little Chef and Happy Eater brands in their company accounts, Kout have yet to utilise the trademarks.[9] The UK's roadside food sector has since moved towards fast-food restaurants and quick service.

In November 2022, Loungers announced they would be launching Brightside Roadside in 2023 to take advantage of the gap in the market to "bring proper hospitality back to roadside dining across the UK".[10][11][12][13] In December 2022, it was announced that Loungers had acquired three of the four locations used by the Route Restaurant chain: two in Devon, and one in Cornwall.[14][15][16][17][18] They have also acquired a location in Rutland at Ram Jam Services.[19][20][21][22][23]
