Brigid Holmes

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Brigid Holmes (née Atkins; born 1934) is a former Australian aviator, best known for becoming Australia's youngest licenced female pilot in 1952, at the age of 17.[1][2][3]

Holmes grew up in Devonport, Tasmania where she began her pilot training as a 15-year-old in 1950 alongside her older sister Honora.[4]

Her mother Engel Atkins (nee Holyman) was also a pilot and the first female member of the Tasmanian Aero Club.[4][5] Engel Atkins' brothers Ivan Holyman and Victor Holyman founded Holyman's Airways which amalgamated with Adelaide Airways and West Australian Airways to become Australian National Airways in 1936.[2]

In 2010, Holmes publicly expressed her concerns in the media about the lack of hospital beds in Tasmania after her partner was forced to wait for urgent heart surgery.[6][7]

Holmes retired to the Capricorn Coast in Queensland with her partner in 2011, where she teaches weekly Tech Savvy Seniors computing classes to senior citizens at the Livingstone Shire Community Centre and also volunteers at the Yeppoon Coast Guard.[5][8][9][10] In 2017, Holmes was recognised for five years service with the Yeppoon Coast Guard.[11]

Holmes has named Amelia Earhart as her inspiration.[5]
