History[edit]
Establishment[edit]
The team was formed in 2019 under the name of AIHL Brisbane with the aim to secure an Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) licence. The bid was officially launched in August 2020 across their website and social media channels.[1]
In May 2021, Ben Spillane was named the Head Coach of the proposed expansion team.[2]
In July 2021, the franchise announced their team name, the Brisbane Rampage, as well as the team colours and branding which uses a dark charcoal grey combined with the familiar Queensland colours of maroon and gold that is used by other sporting teams within the state.[3]
The Rampage became a founding member of the Pacific Hockey League which was announced in February 2022.[4]
First season[edit]
On April 16, 2022, the franchise announced their team roster which included several previous Gold Coast Blue Tongues players as well as import players and coaches[5]. Team captains were announced four days later with Harley Anderson named as the team's first captain. Alternate captains Josh Anderson and Stefan Speck were also announced[6].
Team uniforms were unveiled in May prior to the following weekend's opening round of the Pacific Hockey League.[7]
The team played their first ever regular season game on May 14, 2022, a 7-6 win over The Coast Ice Hockey Team at Erina Ice Arena. Jordan McTaggart scored the team's first goal with Owen Sobchak registering the first assist.[8]
Jordan McTaggart would go on to score the team's first hat-trick the following night in a 5-4 win against The Coast to close out Round 1 of the season.[9]
Patrick Popovics would notch the team's first Gordie Howe hat-trick in Round 6 of the season.[10]
The Rampage finished their inaugural season in second place[11] in the standings following the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Adelaide Avalanche with a 10-8-0-2 record and 32 points.[12] The team would take on the Avalanche in a single-game elimination playoff at Iceworld Acacia Ridge in Brisbane with the winner advancing to the a best-of-three final against the first place Melbourne Ducks. The Avalanche defeated the Rampage 11-2.[13]
