Broken Chains is a 2021 documentary film directed by Michael Lints and Aaron Stewart. The documentary examines the racial wealth gap and the underlying systemic barriers to black success through the eyes of economists, educators, entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and technologists.

The film was made possible with financial support from Silicon Valley Bank..[1]

Synopsis[edit]

Broken Chains is a documentary project started in June 2020 after global protests against institutional racism following the murder of George Floyd. The death of George Floyd and discussion about institutional racism inspired the production team to look for a way to help bring systemic racism to the attention of corporations. According to director Michael Lints, the idea of creating a documentary began after a blog post he wrote on the topic went viral [2].

Broken Chains features interviews with senior-level executives and policy and academic experts who give perspectives on how society can create a better path towards financial inclusion, with particular focus on access to opportunity and the creation of wealth.

Production[edit]

Broken Chains was an international production spanning the United States and Asia. This led to a number of challenges for the Singapore-based production team to navigate during the COVID-19 pandemic. The BTCN and Keti Koti production teams worked with remote camera crews across time zones and geographies, conducted interviews over Zoom, and followed safe distancing guidelines to keep the interviewees and crew safe during filming.
