Bruno Samper (born 27 September 1974) is a French filmmaker and multimedia designer.[1][2] His works are known for a strong sense of aesthetics[3][4] and unique Worldbuiling.[5] In 2012, he contributed to the science-fiction romance Vanishing Waves, as the co-writer and creative director.[6] The film won 22 awards worldwide, including a Méliès d'Or at the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation. Working as director duo with Kristina Buozyte, Samper directed and produced the short segment K for Knell[7] for American horror anthology ABCs of Death 2 (2014) and created a science fiction bio-fantasy Vesper (2022) that is praised for its exceptional worldbuiling and invention of a new kind of genre[8]

Early life and education[edit]

Samper was born on 27 September 1974 in Montpellier, France to Camélia and Émile Samper. He has a younger sister Émilie Fernandes (Samper).

He studied semiotic and science of art[9] at Université de Provence Aix-Marseille, France.

Career[edit]

Multimedia designer[edit]

After studying art and semiotics, in 1998, Samper founded the online magazine Panoplie.org,[10] and with many artists he explored new opportunities offered by a media still in its infancy: the Internet. Panoplie.org created a virtual exhibition space for contemporary art and through the new technologies reflected the aesthetics of creation.[11]

In 2001 Panoplie.org became Panoplie studio[12] where Samper was a co-founder and artistic director. A company developed digital interfaces and multimedia productions for cultural institutions and brands such as Arte,[13][14] the French Ministry of Culture, the Palazzo Grassi, Veuve Cliquot[15] and others. The studio gained a solid reputation and received numerous creative awards for its work: FWA,[16][17] Art Directors Club, Golden Hits, Webby Awards,[18] SCAM prize,[19] etc.

In parallel, Samper also developed interactive fiction, games and persistent worlds. Thus in 2002, Samper designed "Society",[20][21] the first online game to have been acquired by the National Fund of Contemporary Art. The game was a study of the subjective and objective interactivity forms, aesthetics representation,[22] and the relationship between art and video game.[23]

On 31 December 2020. Adobe ended support for its famous Flash software.[24] After this date, the online works created with Flash software by Panoplie studio, also ceased to exist.

Samper was also working on his first video game Profusion.[25] It is an innovative adventure game that takes place in a heart of nanoworld where the player doesn't act as ONE main character but as an entire species. Player must evolve as species of "self-replicating nano robots" which acquire a collective artificial intelligence through the emotions they use to communicate.[26][27] Unfortunately, the game did not enter the production stage.

In 2011 Samper became a Co-founder and CEO of Nedd - an Immersive marketing agency conceiving XR experiences.[28] In 2018 Samper created an award winning augmented reality experience “Enter the room[29] for the International Committee of Red Cross[30] which participated in many festivals, like Siggraph among others.

Filmmaker[edit]

In 2008 Samper began to collaborate with Lithuanian director Kristina Buozyte. He co-wrote the film "The Collectress".[31][32] The film received some positive reviews and was shown in more than 30 film festivals in Europe (Karlovy Vary, Pusan, Valencia Film Festival, Meinheim, Kinoshock (in Anapa, Russia), North Africa (Cairo Film Festival) and South America (São Paulo). It received The Best Movie Award in Lithuanian Silver Crane Awards and the Best Director Award at the Kinoshock film festival in Russia in 2008.

In 2012 Samper was both co-writer and Creative Director of the sci-fi film "Vanishing Waves[33] It is the first science fiction film made in Lithuania and the first Lithuanian film distributed in North America.[34] Because of the uncertain boundaries between dream and reality Vanishing Waves is often compared with Christopher Nolan’s Inception, except when Christopher Nolan's films are called sterile and sexless, Vanishing Waves gives the audiences an immersive depiction of unconscious dreamworld as a surreal and explicit psychosexual smorgasbord that would make Freud blush.[35]

In 2014 Samper directed and produced the short segment “K for Knell" for American horror anthology ABCs of Death 2”. It was his first film co-directing with Kristina Buozyte.[36] Some critics called it the most attractive and elegant contribution to the anthology that goes back to the days of classic, paranoid science fiction.[37][38]

In 2022 Samper and Buozyte wrote and directed their first English-language science fiction "bio-punk" fairy-tale "Vesper". The movie is praised for its exceptional worldbuilding and multilayered storytelling.[39][40][41]
