Bryndon Cook known professionally as Starchild & The New Romantic, is an American artist, actor, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and writer based in New York City.[2]
Early Life
Cook was born in Washington D.C., in Prince Georges County. Growing up in both Maryland and Atlanta, GA, Cook later graduated from SUNY Purchase's BFA Acting Program while touring and performing with Solange Knowles, Blood Orange and Kindness.[3] Cook was a band member and music director for Knowles on the A Seat At The Table tour.[4] He also worked on the Grammy Award-winning album, co-producing and playing bass guitar on "Don't Touch My Hair".[5] Cook has since music directed for Kelsey-Lu and others[6].
His debut EP Crucial (2016) and LP Language (2018) released on Ghostly International, with the latter receiving a 7.2 rating on Pitchfork.[7]
The moniker Starchild & The New Romantic is a portmanteau bridging the traditions of Afro-Futurisim and New Romanticism.[8]
Music
Cook graduated from SUNY Purchase BFA Acting Program while touring and recording for Solange Knowles, Dev Hynes, Kindness and Chairlift, featuring his mentor Patrick Wimberly. His debut album, Language, was positively received upon release in 2018. He released his sophomore album Forever, in 2020[9]
TV & Film
Cook has been featured in recurring roles on shows such as Godfather of Harlem and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Cook appears in the Lin-Manuel Miranda directorial debut Tick, Tick... Boom! (film) on Netflix in 2021.[10]
