Bryony Mathew is a British diplomat, serving as British Ambassador to Iceland since August 2021.[1]
Education[edit]
Mathew graduated from University College, Oxford with a degree in Experimental Psychology in 1996. She then completed a Master's in Biological Anthropology at the University of Durham and a PhD in Neuroscience at University College London.[2][3]
Career[edit]
Mathew joined the Foreign and Commonwealth office in 2005, and worked in roles including Second Secretary, Climate Change and Energy in Beijing and as Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Phnom Penh.[4]
Ambassador to Iceland[edit]
She was appointed as the British Ambassador to Iceland in August 2021, succeeding Michael Nevin. She is the first woman to hold the position. In October 2021, she attended a Royal Air Force visit to Iceland. The RAF contingent involved an Atlas A400M and a Poseidon MRA1 aircraft, as part of increased cooperation between the UK and Iceland.
Mathew said of the event: "The visit provided an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between the UK and Iceland, in areas of mutual interest, whilst improving our understanding of how the Poseidon MRA1 can provide additional support to the Icelandic Coast Guard."[5]
