Bu Ji (died 1048) was a Song dynasty rebel, who along with Zhang Luan helped Wang Ze gain a large number of Maitreyan cult followers. After Wang rebelled in Bei Prefecture and declared himself a "King", he made Bu the commissioner of his "Bureau of Military Affairs".

Little is known about the historical Bu Ji. However, Bu is an important character in the Ming dynasty fantasy novel The Three Sui Quash the Demons' Revolt, loosely based on Wang's rebellion.

Biography[edit]

In 1047, Bu Ji was a subprefecture employee in Bei Prefecture, along with Zhang Luan. What happened to him later is unknown, but most likely he was killed in February 1048 when the rebellion was crushed, or in March 1048 when Wang Ze was dismembered in Kaifeng Prefecture.

In fiction[edit]

In The Three Sui Quash the Demons' Revolt, Bu Ji was originally an honesty peddler from Zheng Prefecture without a family. Once, returning from Kaifeng where he sold his stock of honey locust seeds, Bu saw a beautiful young girl resting in the outskirts of Zheng Prefecture. The girl, who was actually a wanted sorceress named Hu Yong'er (胡永兒), complained of footsore and asked Bu to carry her in his wheelbarrow.
