Bubbies Fine Foods is a privately held American brand of fermented foods currently owned by Katalina Holding Company. Founded in 1981, Bubbies Fine Foods sells products throughout North America, with the brand's primary focus being fermented pickles[2]

The company slogan, uttered by the photograph of ‘Bubbie.’ reads “Eat My Pickles, Wear Clean Underwear. Marry a Doctor”.

History[edit]

Bubbies Pickles began in 1981, in the San Francisco bay area, selling dill pickles in local stores and specialty food markets. John and Kathy Gray purchased the stock and pickling equipment in 1989. Shortly after they acquired the company, they initiated a brand overhaul. The product received a new label with a picture of Kathy Gray’s grandmother - her “bubbie” - a Yiddish word meaning grandmother.

The company initially built the brand by focusing on the relationships with customers, distributors and food brokers. The company spread brand awareness through food trade shows, while continuing to emphasize the authenticity of its products. A key focus of the company's branding is the use of fermentation which is targeted towards the live foods probiotics market[3][4]. Bubbies's line of products has expanded over the years from its original dill pickles to include spicy dill pickles[5], spicy and normal sauerkraut[6][7], dill relish[8], bread and butter pickles[9], beet and prepared horseradish[10], pickled green tomatoes and pickled herring[11][12]

Bubbies Pickles has grown from its original operations in the San Francisco Bay area to a marketer whose products sell coast-to-coast throughout the U.S. and in Canada. The company initially retailed its products in natural food stores, but has since expanded the availability of its products through mainstream retailers nationwide.[13]

On April 1, 2016, the Bubbies of San Francisco became Bubbies Fine Foods, LLC, as part of a reorganization under the newly-formed [[Katalina Holding Company]], Inc. Cook’s Pantry, a second LLC, was also established under the Katalina umbrella. Bubbie’s operations recently relocated to Ventura, CA, the headquarters of Katalina Holding Company, as well as Cook’s Pantry.
