Toad Sweat is a line of dessert hot sauces developed with the intent of pairing chili pepper heat and fruit juices for use on sweet dishes, such as ice cream or cheesecake. The product was introduced publicly at the Austin Fiery Foods Show in Texas on August 23–25, 1997,[1] and gained wider recognition following a feature on Good Morning America on August 25, 1997.[2] The exposure contributed to its early popularity as a novelty item in the niche dessert hot sauce market.
History
The concept behind Toad Sweat originated in the early 1990s when creator Todd Guiton encountered a hot pepper jelly spread on cream cheese at a gathering in Richland, Washington. Inspired by the flavor combination, he began experimenting with cheesecakes incorporating jalapeño peppers, developing an early lemon jalapeño cheesecake that was well-received. An accidental introduction to habanero peppers led to further experimentation with citrus flavors, culminating in a habanero Key lime cheesecake.[3]
After serving the cheesecake prior to being fully thawed, several customers commented that his cold cheesecake slices would be "Great as an ice cream." Soon after, Guiton presented his sauce at the Fiery Foods Show in Austin, Texas, from 23 to 25 August, 1997.[1] The product's profile received a significant boost on 25 August 1997, when Good Morning America featured a segment in which host Charles Gibson and co-host Elizabeth Vargas sampled the sauce over ice cream. This exposure contributed to its rapid early success and helped establish Toad Sweat as an icon within the niche market of dessert hot sauces. [2] This national exposure bolstered the brand’s reputation as the original dessert hot sauce.
Further exposure of the sauces continued at later Fiery Foods shows including in Albuquerque in March 1998 when a reporter for the Albuquerque Tribune sampled the sauce. They named it the "Most Brilliant Invention."[4]
Peppered Palette and company history
The sauce is made by Peppered Palette Ltd, a company established by Guiton in the mid-1990s in Flintstone, Georgia[5] and now based in Lancaster, Lancashire, United Kingdom.[6]
