Buni Yani (born 16 May 1969) is an Indonesian politician, researcher, and former journalist and lecturer. He became popular as the uploader of the controversial speech by Governor of Jakarta Basuki Tjahaja Purnama on Pramuka Island, Thousand Islands, Jakarta on September 27, 2016.[1] The 30-second video clip where Ahok uttered a controversial statement consciously committing religious blasphemy by recklessly linking the interpretation of the verse Al-Maidah 51, finally became the public spotlight and went viral resulting in a national uproar and massive mass actions against Ahok in 2016, demanding arrest on charges of blasphemy and blasphemy against the Quran.[2][3][4]

Background[edit]

He was born in Muntut Hamlet, Rensing Village, West Sakra District, East Lombok Regency on May 16, 1969.[5] He is the third of six children from a family of traders. He was known by his mother as a child who was smart, quiet, patient, rarely played, and liked to read.[6]

Buni received his education at SMP Negeri 1 Sakra and SMA Negeri 1 Mataram. He completed his higher education in 1993 at the Bachelor of English Literature Department, Faculty of Letters, Udayana University, Bali.[6] In 2000, he then received an educational scholarship and earned a Master of Arts degree in Southeast Asian studies from Ohio University, United States in 2002. Finally he studied for a Doctoral degree and became a researcher at the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology, Leiden University, Netherlands.[6]

Journalistic & Academic career[edit]

Buni Yani is known to have been active as a journalist from 1996 to 1999 through RCTI, having worked as a journalist for the Australian Associated Press and often writing about issues related to Southeast Asia. While in the United States, ge was also a journalist for Voice of America.[7]

Most recently, Buni Yani worked as a lecturer/teaching staff at STIKOM London School of Public Relations (LSPR), Jakarta, from 2004 until he resigned in 2016.[7]

Political career[edit]

In 2021, since the Ummah Party was founded and declared, Buni Yani has been active as a politician and has been part of the movement and struggle of the Ummah Party under Amien Rais together with other friends and comrades, and most recently in November 2021 he received the mandate in his political position as Deputy General Chair of the Ummat Party.[8][9][10] Buni Yani is one of the founders of the Ummah Party along with 98 other people in Yogyakarta.

Buni Yani runs for member of the House of Representative in Jakarta I electoral district under the Ummah Party banner during the 2024 general election. However, he did not get elected as he and his party did not reached the parliament threshold.[11]
