Hessa Abdullah Lootah (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is an Emirati media personality.[2][3] She began her career in television directing (1983-1995).[4] She worked as a director at Dubai TV (1983–1990) and a journalist for Al Khaleej newspaper in 1980,[5] before her role as Head of the Mass Communication Department at the United Arab Emirates University (2000–2004). She was also one of the founders of the Dubai Women's Association and the General Women's Union in the UAE.[6]
Biography
Lootah was born in the Emirate of Dubai. Her grandfather was Nasser Lootah, who established a school, an endowment (waqf), and a mosque in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, in 1938.[7][8]
Lootah earned a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts in Filmmaking from San Francisco Art Institute (1985), followed by a Master of Arts in Media and Development with a focus on Middle Eastern studies—a joint program between the School of International Studies and the College of Mass Communication at Ohio University (1995). She also earned her PhD in Mass Communication from the same institution in 1999.[9]
She worked at the United Arab Emirates University, progressing from a teaching assistant (1990–2000) to an assistant professor and ultimately serving as the Head of the Mass Communication Department (2000–2004).[5]
Lootah was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Emirates Literature Foundation since 2013,[10][11] but later retired.[12] Now, she serves on the Board of Trustees for the Taryam Omran Award for Journalism[13] and is a member of the National Media Council.[10] She is also a jury member for the Muhr Emirati Competition at the Dubai International Film Festival.[14]
Lootah co-founded the first women's association in the UAE—the Omani Women's Association (UAE was part of Oman Coast then), besides the General Women's Union, and the Emirates Human Rights Association (EHRA).[15]
Awards
- 1981: Award of the General Women's Union for pioneering women.[8][9]
- 2006: Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Award for knowledge in the field of community service.[16]
- 2013: Federal Personality Award.[17]
- 2015: UAE Pioneers Award from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.[18][19]
- 2017: Personality of the Year Award from the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature.[20][21][22][23]
