Burdeinei

Burdeinei is an 18th century Ruthenian (Rusyn) surname[1] from the Carpathian Mountains of Europe, most notably in Western Ukraine. In Ukraine it is spelled Бурдейний. Other alternate spellings of the surname Burdeinei include: Burdeyney, Burdeiney, Burdeiny, and Burdejny.
There are three possible origins of this surname:
- the origin is from the Ukrainian word "burdei" which is a type of pit-house usually found in the Carpathian Mountains.[1]
- the origin is from the Ruthenian word "burdej" meaning a pit dug into the ground, serving as temporary shelter for the forest guard in the Carpathian Mountains of Western Ukraine.[1]
- the origin is from the Russian nickname "Bourdein" which comes from the name of the Bessarabia Kalderash Roma hut or dugout.[1]
