Burhaan Kinu (born 24 April 1986) is a photojournalist from Kashmir.[1] He presently works as a staff photojournalist for the most popular and largely circulated daily newspaper of India, Hindustan Times[2] and he is currently based in New Delhi, India. In 2013, his photograph of Holi celebration was judged by Huffington Post among the 52 most breathtaking photos from around the world.[3] While covering an encounter in 2010, Burhaan got trapped and had a narrow escape in an exchange of gunfire between Indian Armed Forces and Militia in Srinagar.[4]

Life and work[edit]

Burhaan was born in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. He has been covering one of the most contentious spaces in the world today, the conflicted spaces of Kashmir region through his lenses. His photography has captured the conflicts of the region as well as the unique and beautiful cultures of the province. In 2011 he left job with Kashmir Observer in Srinagar before joining Hindustan Times on a staff position in New Delhi in 2012.

Kinu worked for local daily newspapers and news magazines in Kashmir since 2006 before moving to India's capital New Delhi in 2012. He was interviewed by faculty in Brown University for his coverage of the Summer 2010 Kashmir uprising. He has also covered the conflicted spaces in Northeast India, the conflict between Rengma Naga and Karbi tribes, and Mizo and Bru, refugee camps in Nagaland and Assam.[5] His photos have been discussed and exhibited at the South Asia conference, University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2014. His work has published worldwide including renowned international news organisations like TIME [6][7] Los Angeles Times, BBC,[8] Aljazeera, Getty Images,[9] ABC News,[10] Huffington Post, Bloomberg,[11] The Denver Channel, CNBC, Corbis[12] and Demotix.[13] In 2012, he was also selected as the cover photographer of an academic literary journal Cerebration.org which is jointly published from New Jersey and India. In November 2016, Burhaan Kinu was conferred the most prestigious journalism award in India, the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award[14] for 2015 in the Photojournalism category for his photographic coverage[15] of the aftermath of the 2015 Dadri mob lynching.

Significant Projects[edit]

Some of the most important assignments Burhaan has done are covering the refugee camps and tribal conflict in Northeast India, Kashmir conflict,[16] the aftermath of 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots,[17] 2014 Badaun gang rape allegations,[18] 2015 Dadri mob lynching, May 2015 Nepal earthquake[19][20] amongst others.[21] Burhaan Kinu covers very varied issues and topics and his work not only is diverse, but it also dedicated to bring out the focus on human rights and an ethicality of vision.
