The Bussin’ Bowl is an American college football rivalry between the Michigan Wolverines and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The teams first played in 1905 and have met 12 times. The winner of each year’s game receives The Bus, a 40-pound statue of a bus that was first presented in 2022.
History[edit]
The two midwestern schools have long, decorated histories in the sport of college football. They first met on October 21, 1905 in Ann Arbor. Michigan won the inaugural matchup by a score of 31-0. They met again in 1911, which ended in a 6-6 tie, and then again in 1917, where Michigan won 20-0.
Nebraska won their first game in the series in 1962, after a 45-year hiatus, by a score of 25-13. The two played each other in the 1986 Fiesta Bowl, where Michigan won 27-23. They met again in the 2005 Alamo Bowl, ending in a Nebraska 32-28 victory.
In 2011, Nebraska joined the Big Ten Conference and was placed in the Legends Division alongside Michigan. The Wolverines won the inaugural conference matchup in 2011 but Nebraska evened the series at four wins apiece with consecutive victories in 2012 and 2013.
Following a second conference realignment in 2014, Michigan and Nebraska were placed in opposite divisions and didn’t meet again until 2018, where the Wolverines posted the largest margin of victory in the series, defeating the Huskers 56-10. Michigan has won their last two matchups in 2021 and 2022, creating the longest winning streak in the series’ history at three games.
Establishment of trophy[edit]
The idea behind the creation of the Bussin’ Bowl was spearheaded by a pair of former players, Taylor Lewan of Michigan and Will Compton of Nebraska. Lewan was a star offensive lineman for the Wolverines from 2009 to 2012 and was a two-time All-American and a three-time All-Big Ten. Compton played for Nebraska from 2008 to 2012 and was an integral part of the Cornhuskers’ defense under head coach Bo Pelini. While teammates on the Tennessee Titans, Lewan and Compton created the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast in 2018.
In March 2022, the two hosts interviewed Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. Following the interview, The Bussin' With The Boys twitter page posted pictures of the three along with a piece of paper signed by Harbaugh agreeing to the formation of the Bussin’ Bowl.[3]
Following the firing of head coach Scott Frost and the reluctance of the Nebraska athletic department, the legitimacy of the Bussin’ Bowl is still in question.[4] However, after the 2022 game, Michigan players posed with and took pictures of themselves holding The Bus[5] as well as the Michigan football team storing the trophy alongside their three other rivalry trophies; the Little Brown Jug, the Paul Bunyan Trophy, and the George Jewett Trophy.
