CHI-CHI (Hangul: 치치) was a South Korean girl group under Trophy Entertainment and Yedang Entertainment. The group's name is an acronym for "Creative electronic House Idols" which represents their overall music style.[1] The group made their official debut in March 2011 with the single "Jangnanchijima" (장난치지마, "Don't Play Around"). As of October 2013, the group has been disbanded.
History
2011: Debut, "Longer" and lineup changes
Prior to their debut, CHI CHI held a showcase to promote the release of their single "Jangnanchijima" (장난치지마, "Don't Play Around") on March 18, 2011. At the event, they performed in front of news reporters as well as partaking in their first press conference hosted by actress and label-mate Hong Soo-ah.[2] The group's music video was released on March 18, 2011 co-starring actor Lee Jong-suk of the television drama Secret Garden. CHI CHI then made their television debut on SBS's Inkigayo on March 20, 2011.[3] After several performances, the members began receiving requests from producers to appear on variety shows.[4] They were also featured on the dance game Audition Online.[5]
CHI CHI revealed plans to return with a new single in May.[6] However, it was delayed and the single was pushed back to July.[7] They have also gained an endorsement deal with “Yoheim Smoothie”.[8] The single, titled "Longer", was released on July 21. The single features 3 different versions of the title track. The MV was also released on the same date.[9] The song peaked at number sixty-six on the Gaon weekly digital chart.[10]
CHI CHI made their foray into reality television with ETN's Hot Shot, which premiered on August 12.[11] It showcased behind the scene episodes revolving around CHI CHI and their daily ventures. Rookie boyband HITT have made a guest appearance on the show.[12]
Reflexjun, a choreographer of Yedang Entertainment, revealed on Twitter that CHI CHI could possibly comeback with an album next year.[13] On November 23, it was announced that CHI CHI would participate in Yedang Entertainment's first overseas concerts in Asia and the United States.[14] CHI CHI has appeared on Japanese television shows such as Star VJ Show[15] and K-pop Idol Toryumon.[16]
On December 12, 2011, it was revealed that Nara, Peach, and Ji-U were no longer members of CHI CHI and that a replacement member, Shine, was added.
2012: Japanese debut, "Love is Energy", and rumored comeback
CHI CHI debuted in Japan with a remake of their Korean single, "Jangnanchijima", re-titled as "Karakawanaide!! (Jangnanchijima)" (からかわないで!! -ジャンナンチジマ-; "Don't Play Around"). CHI CHI held a showcase titled Shibuya CHI-CHI Festival in Japan every month until its release.[17] The single was released on April 25, 2012, through Tokuma Japan Communications,[18] peaking at number fifty-eight on the Oricon charts.[19]
CHI CHI released their third Korean single "Love is Energy" on June 29. The choreography for the song, with a signature dance move called the "hand blender," gained a lot of attention both in Korea and internationally.
On August 18, CHI CHI released the song "Pink Lens," which was included in the original soundtrack for Korean teen drama Ma Boy[20]
Some photos were leaked in early fall 2012 apparently showing member A-Zi in a recording studio, as well as an image of Shine, A-Zi, Sui and Semi in white vintage dresses. Member Boreum has not made any appearances with the group since the summer of 2012 (the company released a statement she was "too unwell" to perform in a 2012 Christmas concert)[21] leading to speculation that she has departed the group.[22]
2013: Disbandment
On October 23, 2013, CHI CHI's choreographer, Reflexjun, posted a statement on Twitter regarding their current status, saying that CHI CHI had disbanded earlier that year.[23] Before this announcement, it was already speculated by fans that some members had left several months ago due to Twitter inactivity (dating back to January/February 2013) and the removal of "CHI CHI" in their profiles.
Shine is speculated to be the last member who left the group due to having several solo activities where she was promoted as being part of CHI CHI. Her last appearance as "Shine" was in MBC Every1's "Korean Art Idol Competition" back in May 2013.[24] Shine now goes by the name Lee Shi-a and became an actress under 1n1 Stars.[25] Shi-a starred in Kim Jaejoong's "Just Another Girl" MV, making it her first activity since leaving CHI CHI.[26] Shi-a has then made her acting debut in SBS's My Lovely Girl and her first lead role in JTBC's Maids.
