COSIMA is a XML-based content management system to create technical documentation.

    History[edit]

COSIMA is a content management system developed since 2004, which can be adapted highly to the requirements of the technical writers. COSIMA go! is a version developed since 2008, which can be deployed without customization. Internal components of the system (DTD, stylesheets, workflows, standardized safety instructions) are pre-configured to match usual processes in small and medium-sized enterprises.[1][2]

    COSIMA go![edit]

COSIMA go! supports the workflow (writing, correction, translation, publishing) of documentation in a technical writing department of small and medium-sized enterprises. COSIMA go! supports, for example, variants management, termbase, authoring memory, standardized safety instructions and faceted classification. COSIMA go! can be customized and automated with JavaScript.[3] Editing, storage, processing and version control of the XML based data is done in a client-server model.

Technical writers edit documents on the client side. The documents are composed of individual modules, which can be reused in multiple documents or product variants. On the server side, the XML data is transformed into various other formats (single source publishing). Layout of those formats can be customized with style sheets.[4]

    COSIMA enterprise[edit]

COSIMA enterprise is based on COSIMA go!, but as custom software, it is can be customized highly to the requirements of the organizsation. While COSIMA go! provides a DTD to structure the XML data, COSIMA enterprise uses the existing information model und the existing data of the organization.[5] COSIMA go! as well as COSIMA enterprise are based on the Eclipse Rich Client Plattform and can be therefore customized widely.

    Machine Safety[edit]

Machine Safety is a web application based on COSIMA. Machine Safety is used to create legally compliant risk assessments for CE marking according to the European Machinery Directive, Directive 2006/42/EC, ATEX und ISO 12100, which is necessary for machines distributed in the European economic area.[6][7]

    TopicPilot[edit]

TopicPilot published content (e.g. manuals, diagrams or videos) on a central content delivery platform in the internet or intranet. Content is not created in TopicPilot itself, but imported from other sources (e.g. COSIMA, PDF, Word or XML based formats). Users can access TopicPilot with a web browser, iOS-, Android-, or Windows app. In TopicPilot, used can view topics, search information with a full-text search (or by searching for facets) and download content for offline usage. TopicPilot can be extended by other applications such as augmented reality to enrich the content.[8]
