CSS Composites is an American equipment manufacturing company specializing in bicycle components and related products such as bicycle rims and wheels.[3][4][5][6] The Gunnison, Utah-based company was founded in 2018 by Joe Stanish and Jimmy Seear.

Overview[edit]

CSS Composites was co-founded in 2018 by Joe Stanish and Jimmy Seear, two cycling enthusiasts with background in the bicycle manufacturing industry.[6] The company was registered in Utah and Delaware[2] with the main offices located at Gunnison, Utah.[1] From the start, the company's main focus has been on developing recyclable carbon fiber components for bicycle manufacturers in the US and Western Europe.[7][8][9]

As of spring 2021, the company was in final stages of adding a new manufacturing facility of 50,000 sqft in Richfield, Utah. The new facility is a part of a joint project financed and supported by several entities including the Economic Development Corporation of Utah (EDCUtah), Sevier County and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED).[5][10]

Technology and applications[edit]

CSS Composites' research and development (R&D) has been in the field of testing and creating new composite materials for manufacturing bicycle rims and wheels and other related components.[5] In particular, the company has been working on FusionFiber, a carbon fiber material intended for use on carbon-fiber-reinforced-polymer rims being manufactured for the bike industry. Unlike traditional carbon fiber rims, rims made with FusionFiber are laid out using an automated process, which reduces waste material and the potential for human error. FusionFiber is also recyclable into other materials or parts, such as tire levers.[11][4][6][8][12] As an example of technology application, the company has been extensively collaborating with Revel Bikes, a bicycle manufacturer in the US that uses carbon-fiber components for its wheels.[4][13][3][14][15] The new FusionFiber product has been widely covered by the media and reviewed by industry experts.[16][17][18][19]
