Citizens United Reciprocal Exchange or CURE Auto Insurance is an insurance company offering personal auto coverage in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The company was formed in 1989 as a not-for-profit reciprocal exchange by former New Jersey Insurance Commissioner James J. Sheeran and insurance executive Lena Chang.[1] CURE issued its first policy of insurance in New Jersey on June 1, 1990 and expanded to write policies in Pennsylvania in 2008.[1] As of 2015, CURE insured nearly 50,000 New Jersey automobiles.[2] CURE has been vocal about its philosophy that car insurance rates should be primarily based upon an applicant’s driving record, whereas the overwhelming market of national insurers frequently utilize factors as education, occupation, home ownership or credit scores, which often results in higher rates for low income drivers.[1][3]

Company structure[edit]

CURE Auto Insurance[4] is managed by an Attorney-In-Fact, Reciprocal Management Corporation. As of 2015, CURE has approximately 200 employees, of which over 70% are women and 25% are minorities. CURE was selected by NJ Biz as a finalist in the annual 2015 Business of the Year awards program, which celebrates New Jersey’s most dynamic businesses that demonstrate a commitment to professional excellence, business growth, and the community.[5][not in citation given]

Advertising campaigns and awards[edit]

CURE’s advertising campaigns, in particular its recent Super Bowl commercials,[7][8][9][10][11][12][13] which aired in the New York and Philadelphia markets, won awards and also spawned debates over the appropriateness of sexually suggestive language and content on family television.[14][15][16][17] CURE’s ad campaigns won the 2015 Hermes Creative Award – Gold Winner,[18] two 2016 Silver Telly awards,[19] three 2016 Bronze Telly awards,[20] three 2016 Communicator Awards of Excellence,[21] and two 2016 Communicator Awards of Distinction.[22][23]
